The True Folkswagon

you can buy a tata nano
[#]

Sir, now you can buy a Tata Nano. Hurray !!

Business Week -

It's called the Nano, for its high technology and small size. It's cute, compact, and contemporary. It's a complete four-door car with a 623-cc gas engine, gets 50 miles to the gallon, and seats up to five. It meets domestic emissions norms and will soon comply with European standards. It's 8% smaller in outer length than its closest rival, Suzuki's Maruti 800, but has 21% more volume inside. And at $2,500 before taxes (value-added taxes increase the price by about $300), it is the most inexpensive car in the world. Starting this fall, the Nano will roll off the assembly lines at a Tata Motors (TTM) plant in Singur, Bengal, and navigate India's potholed roads.

There was a blogpost here

There was a blogpost here that I posted for fun, couple of hours back. It read that Lazy Geek will be directing Mani Ratnam. On the hindsight as they say here, I didn't want to use the names of real people so I deleted the entry.

But here's the fun link. Write your own news. Again do not use real names.

S Anand has a neat kollywood music quiz[Part 1 & 2]. He tells me that a tougher 70's quiz is en-route. The pompous blogger in me wants to add that I got all of them right.

Here and There

Anantha (e) Anti pointed to the latest post on his blog, The Chennai Right to Information Initiative, a citizen movement which will be kickstarted this weekend at Chennai. This seems like a better idea than transforming into an Anniyan.

Let's say you are someone who's escaping this intiative by an excuse that you work at Bangalore, hee hee, there's another way to volunteer your time. IVA or Individuals for Voluntary Activities is a non-profit organisation operating from bagalore, has volunteers mainly from software organisations and students who chime in for vounteer work over the weekends. If interested, you could contact the IVA team directly.

Here and There

As the year, nears an end, its time for Indibloggies. Indibloggies 2005 is just getting ready. Their new site, Indibloggies.org has a pretty design. Debashish as Indi Blogger is doing a great job in organising the whole effort. This could be talk of the Indian Blogosphere for the next few weeks, so take a sneak peek.

Manoj of StudentConcepts is arranging for an Himalayan Trek, Heat 2006, to beat the heat of next summer. The email brochure he sent out gives the schedule for this 10 Days / 9 Nights trek will start from Delhi. Seems like a pretty planned one. Check out Student Concepts for more.

Seattle Tamil Sangam is hosting the first ever Carrom Tournament in Seattle area and it happens right next to my house. Its been hosted by the youth board and the president is good friend of mine. Worthy news is that they are arranging some good masala vadais, samosas and ofcourse tea. If you are around, do come along. NO MLM desis allowed !!

Just in case, you missed the first staging of the uproarious Python Hyss...teria by EVAM, its time you get a chance to hurt your bellies. This weekend, they are staging it again, in Chennai. If you are around, you might not want to miss it. Read The Hindu review.

With the rain receding in Chennai, Chennaites are getting ready for the musical rain. Usually it's December but this time, the early bird is The Hindu sponsored November Fest. From U Srinivas to Shuvha Mudgal, there are a bunch of 'not-to-miss' musicians performing this month. Check the schedule as I take a deep breath.

From now you would see too many crib postings here as I miss the Chennai Marghazhi Kutcheri. Get Ready !!

Prolific Tamil Writer Sundara

Prolific Tamil Writer Sundara Ramaswamy passed away last week. See blogposts on Tamil blogs by Badri, Venkat amd Boston Balaji. More than his famous JJ Sila Kuripugal, I enjoyed Oru Puliyamarathin Kathai just for its sheer usage of the sweet Thirunelvelli Thamizh. I had to read JJ Sila Kuripugal twice, to get understand it completely. His contribution to the smal magazines, by being the publisher of Kalachuvadu is a huge service to tamil literature. If interested, do check out some books by Sundara Ramaswamy .

Blogger Arun Vaidhyanathan's short film Thaniyoru Manidhanukku gets selected to IAAC Film Festival in Indian Independent & Diaspora Films section. Do send an email to Arun and he would provide info about the screening. Good Luck, Arun !!

Desikan had pointed to two amazing columns written by Ashokamitran and Raa Ki Rangarajan. While Ashokamitran's anecdote was short sweet and made me feel a little sad, Raa Ki's wish made me feel guilty.

Praveen has a nakkal review on Ghajini here. A commenter Bijoy Bharathan on Hemanth's blog leaves a list of inspirations for Ghajini[Scroll down to read his comment]. Even if we may not accept to his views, his scene comparisons to hollywood films seems almost right.

Sri Hari gets to watch Anurag Kashyap's Black Friday. I am totally envious of him because of the ban and the hype that surrounds it.

Did you read the humongous book called The Suitable Boy. Then you are to like Vikram Seth and his interview to Outlook. After a long long time, he is back with a book called Two Lives which he says was from a story line that his mom told. Seems like a semi-biographical book on his Uncle and Aunt. Why is Aamir Khan excited about Vikram's latest book ?

Meet SJ Surya - The Sultan of Sleaze !!

Finally, how did I miss it. Belated Happy Birthday Babe !! Enna b'day gift from AnbuChelvan?

On a Rainy Friday !!

Chenthil is presently the most linked man in the Indian Blogosphere. With his blogpost on the moral policing happening at Chennai, the blogosphere seems afresh and there is so much of linking and debating going on in this issue. I have my own crib on the Tamil media/matter/morality issue. Nilu is calling for a Lagaan team to show what bloggers are for the system. Check out, you might be interested.

Ammani's recent quick tale a.k.a fast fiction[as I like to call it], Death of a Friend, was fantastic. We are such humongous hypocrites !!

They wouldn't allow a 'good' director to stay in shape. Ab Tak Chhappan's Shimit Amin signs-up for a Yash Chopra banner starring Shahrukh. Rule No.1 in B(K)ollywood - If anyone makes meaningful cinema, make him direct an outright masala as his next movie and he will become one among equals. Huh !!

Maine Gandhi Ko Nahin Mara could be a masterpiece but Urmila, like Kamalhassan, talks too much about the subject during the release of the film. The dudes at Rediff title the interview as Meet Urmila, Gandhian Thinker. Give me a break !!. I am eager to watch it, however.

Oli Oviyar(!!) Thankar Bachan's Chidambarathil Oru Appasamy takes a beating from The Hindu. Update - Get appreciated by Vikatan [44/100].

The ban over the on-screen smoking in television is pushed to Jan 1, 2006. Inimey vaithaaa vaithaa vaithaa thaan. Read previous cribs on the ban here and here.

Enna Special ??

In a superbly written post, Anand deals with infinite possibilites of making Ponniyin Selvan and why he wants to make it into a "diachronic superstory".

Virumandi and Human Genome Project. What a connection ? Tilotamma thinks there exists a genetic marker.

Keerthi says Chandramukhi 175. Now wait for Sivaji.

SJ Surya and Superstar's Wishk Whisk. Sudhish lists why Ah Aha was never a Haa Haa !!

Chenthil pitches his arguments against Pa. Raghavan's Vikatan column. Arun has a detailed commentary on the same column, in Tamil.

Bharath has well written post on Ganguly, Greg and Stats Guru. I couldn't agree with him on the stats issue but was quite hilarious.

Finally, the Handbook For Bloggers is available as PDF and Kiruba points it to be here.

After some time

Been a little busy at work and unable to catch up with reading blogs, forget writing them. Another half week and things might slow down giving way to more time on blogs. After writing the above sentences, I feel like an astrologer writing jyothish on a weekly. Don't you smell astrological grammar?

I have to be a little curt here. Someone has been mailing me with a link that Microsoft chief vows to Kill Google using my email-ID as sender's name. GMAIL categorised it as spam but still I need to blow out my anger. Mavaney, kaila kedacha kaima panniduven !!

Google goes to college with a splash of cool banners. Old wine in a hep bottle!! BTW, have you ever seen a black screen at Google. Check this out !!

So it might become whatever@googlemail.com instead of the cool whatever@gmail.com. Looks like the legal controversy over GMAIL is proving to be of some merit to the Google contenders who claim intellectual property rights over GMAIL. What a USP @gmail.com is. I am upset to see it go away.

Wonder whatever happened to Tamil cinema. It’s probably on a long leave or something. Not so interesting releases that inspires me to go and watch a film. Worse, I don't even bother to look at the Tamil films aisle in the Indian store. Ponniyin Selvan sounds a little interesting comparing to others. Certainly not the Vetti Jaya [via Hemanth].

Stree Samanya [Kannada] - Vettayadu Villayadu [Tamil] - KS Ravi Kumar film [Tamil] - Rama Naidu's film [Telugu]. There goes Kamal Hassan's schedule for the next half year or so. So the only missing link for Kamal is a mallu film and that will complete a round of South Indian films. Basically this is a just a link but I hyped it on the account of consciously continuing the Kamal-Rajini post. Hee Hee!!

A Post Of Questions

Do you know ? Google's "70% engineers" consume, 2300 lbs of chicken, 1600 lbs of coffee, 500 lbs of pasta and 112 lbs of wheatgrass. Apart from this there are some worthy stuff that's happening in Google, including the Google Earth intiative. Just in case, if you have tons of bandwidth to spare, check out the webcast of Google's Factory Tour. Also flip through the presentation.

Haven't you unplugged the bad IPODs ? I just did after reading this scary Newsweek article, A Little Bit Louder, Please, that still resonates in my ear. If you are still busy listening to a loud shout of Aerosmith this what they say - One study estimates that as many as 5.2 million children in the United States between 6 and 19 have some hearing damage from amplified music and other sources. If they don't take steps to protect their hearing, the iPod Generation faces the same fate as the Woodstock Generation. Or worse.

How Jobs turned the iPod into an icon ?. This man, Steve Jobs never stops from being impressive.

Sacred Cows, Their Horns talks about the protests gone wrong. Why and what went wrong with Jo Bole So Nihaal ?

Why India is searching for Edisons in Dozens ?. A long read but truly makes sense to me.

The PST Paradox

There is some ghost on this blog. This is the nth time unintentionally a Kamal post follows a Rajini one or viceversa. On Saturday, when I was writing the Rajini post I was determined that the next post was not going to be on Kamal. Somehow the Nayakan post one sneaked in. Save the blog from the ghost. Laka Laka Laka.

Living in PST timezone has its own share of dis-advantages. The prime time on cable starts by 5:00 pm EST which is 2 PM here in Seattle. By the time I reach home at 7 pm the New Yorkers are into the second round of sleep. Hence, the cable sucks after 7PM PST. The good thing about it is that you get to see the replay of those afternoon shows. On today's Oprah replay, Tom Cruise declared his head-over-heels love for Katie in public. It seemed like Dhanush declaring his love to his group of friends. I've always admired Tom for his controlled acting but today he was his true self. Un-controlled.

Steven Spielberg who was on a recorded interview to Oprah wished Tom Cruise on his love and spoke his latest flick starring Tom Cruise, War of the Worlds. They also played a lengthy teaser on the movie. Mark your calendars, War of the Worlds opens on June 29.

Sunny Deol's new movie kicks of a huge controversy. Following the bomb blasts in two theatres of Delhi which were screening the movie, cities all over India stop screening the movie. Chennai joins the list.

The economic transformation of India since liberalisation is real, but it will be a while before the average middle class Indian tosses her Lakmé aside for a Lancome, or trades in her handmade salwar-kameez for a Ralph Lauren pantsuit. After all, why shouldn't globalisation speak with an Indian accent?. My favorite Shashi Tharoor writing that on his Hindu Column details on Who is this middle class ?

Bhaskar Ghose writes on Poile Sengupta's latest theatre work, Keats Was A Tuber. At first I didn't understand the meaning of the play name. But as I read through, I nodded in acceptance. FYI, Poile Sengupta isn't Bengali. She is from Tamil Nadu and I happy we have yet another brilliant playwright from TN.

[Pic - Dan DeLong for Seattle PI ]

That guy ?. Yeah he is probably the biggest Star Wars fan of all. Jeff Tweiten, incidentally a Blogger too, was waiting outside Seattle's Cinerama Theatre ever since Jan 15 2005, waiting for Revenge of the Sith to release on May 19th. He was there camping for 139 days. I've heard my dad recollect that people were waiting for more than two days for MGR's Adimai Penn but this one just beats them to death. George Lucas must be happy for this true fan. Thanks to Ram for the info.

Weekend Webclips[Google style]

Anand's Aeroprise wins First Prize at Mobile Showcase 2005. A time to rejoice. Congrats Guest Blogger!!.

Anniyan website is now functional with some more odd looking Vikram's snaps. I am not sure how many more different Vikram's are inside the movie. The trailer is also up but it isn't the version thats has hit the Chennai screens.

Walmart closes down DVD rentals, hands them over to Netflix. Now it's Netflix Vs Blockbuster assuming Amazon stick with it's business.

Dilip D'Souza has good set of easy-n-tough Tin Tin questions. Try your hand. I got atleast 5 correct answers, I think.

Namma Chennai

And you know how I would feel for this title on an Hindu article, Namma Chennai.

The green buses, occasional smell of filter coffee, the cursing in Tamil on the roads, and the roads themselves impart to Chennai a rare flavour. The youth are relatively uncorrupted. Branded clothes and video cameras are still not too visible. But Mylapore and Mandaveli - they are too ancient, dude!
While I parltly agree to the line of youth being relatively uncorrupt, this paragraph roughly sums up Chennai. Man I miss this city badly. Thanks Andy for the link.

Hugh Hewitt's book, Blog : Understanding the Information Reformation That's Changing Your World wasn't a very inspiring read. I probably read it with a perspective of a blogger while Hewitt summarizes the advent and growth of Blogs as history. You would love to read it especially if you wanted to know how Blogs revolutionized the information spread and how the popular acronym MSM[Mainstream Media] was used and sometimes abused in the blogosphere. It also talks on how CNN's popularity was came tumbling while FOX News was starting to be accepted by the American people. Hewitt's earlier writing on Blogs given in the Appendix are lucid with a strong passion for blogs.

If you are looking for a good book to understand the mechanics and practical ways of maintaining a blog, I would recommend Rebecca Blood's The Weblog Handbook. Above all if you are looking for some suggestions on blogs, do it the classical way. There are no suggestions, Just Blog.

I have no clue why Rediff is so bold over by Aishwarya's presence in Cannes festival. Someone's is fetish.

Illayaraja's tunes for Adhu Oru Kanaa Kaalam hasn't come out with flying colors. Except for Andha Naal Nyaabagam rendered by Vijay Yesudas/Shreya Goshal and the Bhavatharini song, the rest of songs can missed without creating a sin. The moment you hear the first song you know it has Balu Mahendra + Illayaraja combo. But no classics here.

Weekendies !!

Kaadhal Yaanai of Anniyan is the latest buzz in kollywood. Srikanth has a good technical review of Anniyan. Prabhu, the kadhal mannan of Chennai Blogosphere get a niche area to review. He reviews the Anniyan lyrics. Great going. I ain't writing any reviews for Anniyan music. Not too inspiring to write about. However I'm glued to acid looping[ as Srikanth says] of Kaadhal Yaanai. Rest, let's watch with the movie.

Chenthil blogs about Madras Book Club function felicitating Jeyakanthan for being awarded the Jnanpith Award. Makes me miss Chennai again.

Eli, Eli, lama sabachthani ? is a great read. This short story which is a sublime commentary of the current social mindset by using the history, was awarded First Prize in Thinnai Sci-fi shortstory contest, judged by Sujatha. Another one which I liked was Bhimba Uyirgal by Arun Vaidhyanathan. The one by Karthikesu on Kofi Anan was an intelligent thought.

Tiger should be out by today. The latest OS offerring from Apple for Mac seems promising. The most talked about feature is like Google to the Mac. Spotlight, a feature in the Tiger Mac OS can search just about anything in the computer with the text you type. They have also added a Robot to the OS, Automator.

After sometime, the competition starts getting annoying. It was as though Yahoo was waiting for Google's release of personal search, their release of My Web just tailgated Google's release. Peace to both the dudes !!

Finally, over the weekend, they predict a little sunshine in Seattle. Planning an outdoor party on the shores of Lake Washington in Mercer Island. Sunshine, I hope.

Rahman, Vikram and some Search history

Looks like Vikram's Coke Podu Ad should be already out on the cable. Directed by Rajiv Menon this should like the Coke Kudi daa Ad he did with Vijay. The Coke Ad really did wonders for Vijay to bring him close to collegiates. I am not sure how it fared for coke. The silly thing was that in ever other movie Vijay appeared with a Coke on his hand. I hope Vikram doesn't drink only Coke in Anniyan. Some reality please.

A R Rahman is on another world tour starting this year. Also talks about his plans for Tamil films in the coming year.

Gautam Menon talks on Vettayadu Vilayadu. Says Kamal is a 40ish cop. Thats cool.

Google is all set to gather your personal search history. Like A9. A long awaited feature is here finally.

April 14, 2005

How to name this post ?

Ram Murali was lucky enough to catch a preview of Mumbai Xpress. Also has put up a cool review on it. The first review of this movie. BTW, Mumbai Xpress gets red carpet welcome. Big-time marketing.

An amazing application of Google Maps and Craigslist. Try it out if you know what Craigslist is all about.

Didn't I tell you that this will happen, sooner or later. Adipolli Chetta !!

Schumacher races through Mount Road. In the future. Patience required.

Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi completes 1000 shows. Now Radhika has a new target to reach. Anyone watching mega serials ?

Anyone with a camcorder/ internet connection is now a film maker. The buzz last week on Google Video is now gone live. Upload your videos to Google. Great News to independent and short film-makers.

As-sorted

Business Standard has a well analyzed column, Southern ditty, on the new kollywood music directors.

Podcasting proves popular. The minute Blogger founder EvHead's ODEO is on BETA, I'm trying it out just to checkout even if I may have no listeners.

What's latest in realityTV, you ask. Britney documents her love life with Kevin Federline as a six part series for UPN Channel. Who's watching ?

How is GMAIL's storage counter still running. Simple, they have added one more digit to the decimal part and hence seems like it's running fast but it is actually slow. It's kind of irritating to see a number running always at the side of GMAIL homepage. Urges me shout, WILL YOU STOP THAT CLOCKING !!

Chat with Amit Sana, the Indian Idol runner-up, today. BTW, my post on Indian Idol turned into a discussion board and there are already more 500 comments on it. Looking at the flood of comments, I closed the comments for this blogpost. After getting a few emails asking to re-open the comments section, I opened it up again. I ain't sure when my backend dB would crash because of this.

Summer, Rahman and Hanuman Chalisa

Chennai is getting ready for yet-another-hot-summer. Today was even worse. With the sun hitting hard, a chap was pushing his cylinder filled tri-cycle with barefoot, up the Doraiswamy subway. Life moves on.

Had to do some good amount of packing/unpacking stuff today, at home. A R Rahman gave a helping hand. You probably got that wrong. With a CD playing assorted Rahman songs, packing became a joyous occasion even for a lazy one like me. Music the life giver, reads a Rajinikanth t-shirt in the movie Johnny. How true.

Hanuman Chalisa[pdf] is probably MS Subbulakshmi's best devotional music rendering, I've heard. We know MS sings from her heart, this one comes deep down from the heart. Not a day passes by without listening to it and I unconsciously keep humming it throughout. Thanks to Tulasidas for the ever-faithful lyrics and also to Latha for recommending this one. Do listen if you get a chance.

These guys at Grab A Geek, just got spidered in Google News as a news source and they are out with an article, One Ring to Google them all, that's partly informal and partly informational about Google's Behind-the-scenes.

Anniyan'ji', Where is Mumbai Xpress ?

Tata Telefilms ties up with Sivaji Films on the Chandramukhi marketing. The similar effort by Pepsi for Rajini's BABA which costed nearly 25 lakhs(?). 75,000 Sq Ft of hoarding space in Chennai alone. I never heard anything like this. the biggest effort until now was for Kamal Hassan's Aalavandan. Pity the Chennai traffic.

Did watch Lingusaamy-Ajith's Ji trailer on the cable. Gripping and ofcourse there is Trisha. But we need to wait and see if Lingusaamy can strike hatrick. If he can it might prove to be a moral booster for Ajith. Pray Ajith Pray.

Kollywood's summer releases are set to be out by April 14th. There is illayraja [Mumbai Xpress], Harris Jayaraj [Anniyan] and Vidyasagar [Chandramukhi]. None except Chandrmukhi have announced music release dates. End of February would be right time to release soundtrack and allow the music to sink in. Are they listening ?

Watch Anniyan while it's still on the sets.

Mayaavi is set to release on 25th Feb. Produced by Bala's B Studios and starred by Surya-Jothika, it could possibly keep theatres enagaged until the summer release films. If only proves to be a laugh riot, nothing like it.

Amitav Andaman and Amrish

Amitav Ghosh, the writer of The Calcutta Chromosome, writes to The Hindu about his experiences on The Tsunami disaster in Andaman as a three-part series.

Amrish 'Mogambo' Puri passes away. In pictures. His last film was Kamal's yet-to-be-released Mumbai Express.

This year's Bhogi went without fogging any flights and the traffic. It's improving every year. Good going.

Not just Tsunami; also geeks

What is here is nowhere else; what is not here, is nowhere. If that sounds like Rajinikanth's quote, it isn't. It is Mahabharata. Shashi Tharoor exposits on the rivetting epic, Mahabharata. Looks like the column would run into weeks, keep watching that space if you are interested.

And you thought software engineers just did coding. They also take up tougher tasks like the relief efforts at the Tsunami hit locations. BTW, What the heck am I doing here ?

Sevanti Ninan's column is always a refreshing read on sunday mornings. This time she has some nice things to say about Weblogs and Bloggers. Read more of The Tsunami Blog.

Is there a difference between this musician and her music ? KG Vijayakrishnan pays a tribute to the MS Magic.

I hate countdowns and numbering stuff but I certainly need to mention this article, Top Bollywood newsmakers of 2004. For a reason. Check out the top-most newsmaker and you know where Bollywood is moving towards. Also this guy, Karan Johar managed to get into the list even without a movie. Fancy that.

Friday Guessing

If you think playing Chris Mom/ Chris Child is childish. No way. We played it on a 50 member team and it proved to be lots of fun and the best of team building exercises. Rocks.

2004 Year-End Google Zeitgeist , the time-spirit of globe, has been released. Guess what - Britney, Christina Aguilera and Pamela 'Bay Watch' Anderson are topping the popular searches. There is just two male dudes in the top 10 popular seaches. Orlando 'Troy' Bloom and Harry Potter. Eminem did made it to the top 2 of Popular Men 2004. One a personal note I am excited that Kurt Cobain and Bob Marley are still in the Top 10 Male Celebrities. Ironically, on a year when music companies came together against music piracy, mp3 is one of the top 10 popular searches.

GMAIL is close to be released public in Jan 2005, I guess. Starting yesterday, GMAIL is giving out 10 more invitations to the subscribers. I know no one needs them anymore. Just in case, leave a comment.

The Heaven's Door

Knock, Knock, Knockin' on Heaven's Door. Not the Bob Dylan stuff but today is Vaikunda Ekaathisi.

Looks like Master Martin Scorsese and Di Caprio combo is going to work again. The Aviator rocks this year's Golden Globe nominations. Releasing for Christmas in the US and no sign of the movie release in Chennai.

It's a joke that you can't watch three continuous songs in Ktv. One of them will be a bad one. Suprisingly it wasn't today. Starting with Sivakumar and Nathiya singing Kanna Unnai Thedukiren in the Kodaikaanal cold, it went on Kamal Sridevi singing Perai Sollavaa from Guru. Finally it was Rajini and Deepa with a voice-over of Senorita !! I love you from Johnny. All three were SPB goodies, picturised at hillstations and also my fave ones. The joke was broken.

Google and the Geek

Here's Google way of wishing Happy Holidays.

Google's desktop search gotta bug[Read it as Aerosmith's Janie's Gotta Gun]. A big bug. I suppose they will fix it with a patch. No Issues.

The last man I was expecting to write such an awe-inspiring essay, The Drive to Discover, in support of NASA's exploration efforts was James Cameron. Like his movies, he starts it with a mastered ease and then he makes you agree that what he says is close to perfect. Must Read.

Badri Aandal Suggest

I did get a chance to watch the interview of Badri Seshadri, co-founder of CricInfo and an avid blogger, in Jaya TV.
