Blogging the Cricket Phenomenon

Where are these so-called-kings ? The Super Kings of Chennai. Chennai Super Kings' site still throws a - The page cannot be found. Khan's Kolkatta team has their site atleast half-built.

There is a huge opportunity to blog this IPL cricket fever. Afterall movies and cricket unite us more than anything else. I'm sure there are companies out there cracking their minds to build sites and business models around this. Blogging will certainly play a huge role as the crowd becomes information hungry.

It's not a stock market. No one is going to be benifitted on the short run. Only blogs that have a regular postings, great user interface, less ad-blocks and bite-size information will sustain the long run. But if you are crazy about cricket and would like to have your say on this arena of the blogosphere, just book your domain and start typing. If you are smart, I'm sure you wouldn't want to start a IPL cricket blog on wordpress.com or blogger.com which are mere sub-domains. It's already over-crowded there.

If you are bunch of college grads and would like to start a cool company around this IPL phenomenon, a blogging network, which hosts a blog/micro-news-site for each of the teams would make a great deal of sense. You don't need tons of money to start this. All you need would be one hosting account these days, to host numerous sites.

As IPL grips India, the early birds to this IPL blogging will have a great say. So if you would want to start, today is the day.

P.S - BTW, I recently booked Go Chennai Super Kings !! [Go CSK] just so some damn domain squatter doesn't walk away with this golden domain. I'm probably not going to do anything with it so if in case you really want to create a blog around this domain, I can certainly part with it.

Yahoo India Maps, Rocks

yahoo_maps_a.jpg

Yahoo India Maps has a new(don't know how new it is) feature which can show the directions in vernacular language(Tamil in Tamilnadu) plus it also gives you the approximate autofare for a particular map. The autofare feature is a joke, atleast in Chennai.

Kalakkal Maa !!

P.S -

Check out this snapshot. Congress Party is probably getting to do a major dharna opposite to Yahoo India Office. Get ready guys.

Vijay batting a new role

kuruvi vijay

Do you know Dr.Vijay(yes, he got awarded a doctor degree while you were busy working to get your next paycheck)is becoming the star ambassador of Chennai Super Kings Team headed by Dhoni (why is he not a Dr. yet?) himself.

From Hindu -

“Being from Chennai, I wanted to support my team,” said Vijay, who will be involved in promotional events for the Super Kings. “I’ve always liked cricket, and in the last few years I’ve started watching more of it. I’m very proud that we have [M.S.] Dhoni, who is a strong leader, to captain our team.”

Super Kings Brand Ambassador and Former India captain Krishnamachari Srikkanth said Vijay would draw youngsters to the tournament. Asked if cricket needed the prop of cinema to lean on, Mr. Srikkanth said, “This is about the Chennai Super Kings, about kings in every field. And we have the Super King of Kollywood with us in Vijay.”

This proves why Pepsi and Coke go with cricketers and movie stars all the time. Because they go well with each other. I wonder if Kolkatta team will have Mithun as the their star ambassador.

I personally like India Cements owing the Chennai Super Kings. My college, Guru Nanak College is the home ground of India Cements team and I'm happy all the machis and chicks of Guru Nakak will get to see the stars practising everyday like we did those days.

Two things. One, Why Chennai Super Kings ? Why not Filter Kings ?. Two, if you didn't know this already, the star ambassadoress(!?) for Chennai Super Kings is the latest action queen of kollywood, Nayanthara.

Saarang 2008 - Did you miss it ?

saarang%202008.jpg

I did. For the last three years. And it sucks.

Looks like this Saarang's Pro Show was the largest crowd puller, ever. Hindu reports that the singer Karthik gave a rocking performance. I know how the stadium would have yelled for Engeyum Epothum.

Karthik returned to his rockish best with “Enakku Oru Girlfriend Venumada” sending fans into a frenzy before his hand lent a nice Elvis-y touch to “Baar Baar Dekho,” a surprise for retro-lovers.

Though what he sings mostly is in the realm of boy-band songs and love ballads, while performing, he does it with the attitude of a rockstar with plenty of scope for audience participation. Yes, it helps that Bennett is quite something with the lead guitar.

Calling the IIT Core members to the stage, he launched into what’s considered an anthem for the youth, “Mustafa Mustafa” for a finale.

Sensing they wanted more, he captured the mood with “Engeyum Epothum Sangeetham Santhosham”.

And, junta was on cloud nine: “ARaaa-raaaa-reee-reeee Yo!”

That was a glowing review. After posting this, I went back and found that the author of the article was Sudhish Kamath. That explains !!

BTW, Did you miss it too ?

Vijay TV's Super Singer

Vijay TV Airtel Super Singer Yet another show on the American Idol format. First it was Indian Idol and now it's Vijay TV's Airtel Super Singer contest. The winner of this super singer contest will get a chance to sing for Harris Jayaraj. The show runs from 8 pm every friday and saturday on Vijay TV.

Believe me this show is good. Just damn good. Not because this show is about music but the tamil touch to this international format is just exciting. And we have some super dooper singers amongst us.

The other day, a participant named Gowtham sang, Rahman / Hariharan's Malargale song. I haven't heard such an amazing control like that from an amateur singer. Nice balance and amazing sangathis. If one was watching this from the first week, they would understand how many singers we have in the country. Though the first round participants included many weirdos, atleast half of the crowd was nice stuff. As of now, the contest is on the fourth round with 20 or 24 contestants. And as it moves forward, its going to be more interesting.

In the initial rounds, the judges included SP Sailaja, Sreenivas, Maalathy and many others. After prelims it's Anuradha Sriram, Sreenivas and Unni Krishnan. While its a nice trio, Anuradha seems to be too bossy and wouldn't allow the other two to do the talking. I'm sure someone would let her know as the show moves on.

Instead of a screwed up film review or a kadi serial, I prefer to spend two hours a week for some nice music contest. Worth the time spent. With such shows, Vijay TV is slowly becoming the best channel for true entertainment. Two years from now, I would expect Vijay TV not to top prime time TRP ratings but to a gather a loyal viewer base.

Blogging Chennai

cc stuff
[Clicked by Chandrachoodan]

Chennai Metroblogging went online last week. A quick read of this page would tell more on Metro Blogging. Chennai is the second city in India after Mumbai to have Metro Bloggers.

The idea to have a chennai metro blog was intially brought-up by Chandrachoodan and it had a warm welcome among Chennai bloggers. All of them applied for this concept, few got selected based on their location and now the metro blog for chennai is up-and-running. Other than ChandraChoodan there are other people like Kaps [whats your true name buddy ?], Keerthivasan, Kiruba, Lavanya, Nancy and Vatsan, who write blogposts on Chennai.

I have to say that I'm quite amused by the stuff that's written there. If they are able to maintain this initial enthusiasm, I'm sure the audience base would grow in heaps. Take a spin and you would become nostalgic about Sambars and Buckets.

Finally...

they took some decision and students could start preparing for the engineering entrance exams.

The Common Entrance Test for professional courses in Tamil Nadu for the coming academic year would be held on May 13 and 14.

Thinking about it, entrances exams for engineering colleges are not necessary at all. There are more engineering colleges in Tamil Nadu than the sum total of rest of the world. Even after one completes a 'professional' degree this is what they say -

Though the State boasts of a high literacy rate and an established higher education apparatus which can generate around 4,00,000 skilled manpower annually, around 40 per cent of graduates from the engineering pool and 70 per cent from the arts and science streams do not meet employability standards.

Badri has some thoughts in tamil.

Yeh Jo Des Hai Tera !!

"NRIs love the re-immersion into Indian culture, the affordability of food, household help, the improved quality of life and spending time with the family." It may not be a homecoming for NRIs at first. But, after a while they slide back into life in India and seem to harbour no regrets about the relocation.
"It's more cost effective for a company to open offices in Chennai than say Bangalore. A lot of MNCs went to Bangalore at first and now the city has peaked. Chennai is a late starter but it scores higher today with better infrastructure, cheaper living, a strong talent pool and a better work ethic."

Chennai Book Fair 2006 - Jan 6th to Jan 16th

Chennai Book Fair 2006
[From Badri]

It's that time of the year, when I'm repent for not being present in Chennai. Chennai Book Fair 2006 is happening from 6th to 16th of Jan. This is the 2nd time in the last two decades when I got to miss the Chennai Book Fair. Ramblings apart, the last few years have witnessed a phenomenal increase in the sales of books in the Chennai Book Fair and I'm expecting that probably very soon, Chennai Book Fair would turn out to be the Khumb Mela of books in India. Ofcourse, the book fair certainly needs more english books to reach there.

Uyirmmai Publishers are staging two gala shows on account fo this book fair. 10 books of Sujatha are being released on Jan 6th at the Sound Indian Chamber of Commerce. This includes 6 new releases and 4 re-prints. Desikan has compiled these books and has more information on his blog. Few interesting ones are the compilation of Sujatha's stageplays and Sujatha's mystery stories. Also their second function to be held on Jan 7th has some very interesting book releases including S. Ramakrishnan's Vizhithirupavanin Iravu and Jeyamohan's Aazhnathiyai Thedi.

Badri Seshadri's Kizhakku Pathipagam has a special blog for Chennai Book Fair 2006. Kizhakku Pathipagama is releasing Aathavan Sirukathaikal by Aathavan. This is one book that I'm personally looking forward. Being a huge fan of Aathavan and his amazing literary works, I'm expecting to get my hands on this book ASAP. I think this is probably the first compilation of Aathavan's shortstories, ever.

If you are in and around Chennai, do drop in. For you may not get this oppurtunity ever. Dear friend, please get ready to recieve an email with some 30 odd book names that I want you to buy and send across.

IIT Saarang 2006

IIT Madras' Saarang 2006 is happening from 24th to 29th January 2006. The dates were just announced and Airtel seems to be the main sponsor of the whole program. Donno what's up with Hutch this time.

This year's pro-shows aren't announced yet. Sulekha sponsored a Saarang Blogathon for the last 2 years. Probably this time too, given that Kiruba is now in Sulekha. But the Saarang has a blog, Saarang Talk[Via Sudhish] written by Amrut. Per the blog, Amrut says that the blog would be a bridge between the Saarang and it's audience.

Anyway, this is just a ramble post as I would be missing the Saarang this year. Saarang has it's own spirit that ranges from being geeky to cheeky. Even if you are fast approaching your big 30s, you are sure to get charged up with the first encounter of the slogan, Live a Saarang !!.

My city, floods !!

chennai floods
[Pic - Via Maverick]

My city is under the attack of water for the second time. Though for chennaites its a happy news, the rain seems to have hampered the day-to-day lives of the city and it's certainly a cause of concern. For a city, full of cheer, to comeback from the rain is going to be a mammoth task.

Not to ramble again, but I do miss the chennai rain while sipping a saravanabhavan kaapi. Wish I was a vairamuthu to be able to send an ode to Chennai starting, Yeh Mazhaiye !!

Free education for girls

Free education for girls who are `single child' is probably the stupidest law, I've come across offlate. How can the department of education be so damn crazy. Having passed out of a CBSE myself, I've to say most schools loot a parent but this is like a tuglak law. Link via Tilotamma.

Srirangam in Shambles

Cauvery Overflow

Prabhu Venkatramani sends me pictures of Cauvery overflowing inside the town of Srirangam. Seems like after years of not-so-much-rain, this one has really affected the temple city. He also writes in the email that the electricity is non-existent for the last three days and the town has come to a standstill. Thats really bad to know. For more news on the floods, read from dinamalar.

Shucks !! What a deepavali this is turning out to be ?

With hundreds of small villages nearly submerged in water, why are the social work bloggers not starting a Srirangam Flood Relief Blog ? A flood is a flood wherever it happens. Right ?

Calling Amma !!

With all the storm blowing between the Kings of Bangalore, it's time for the Amma of Tamil Nadu to reach out and woo Infosys into Tamil Nadu. 500 acres near the ECR at government 'rates' would be enough to make Infosys shift headquaters to Chennai. We lost it once before, not anymore. Come on, Time to get Bangalored Chennaied !!

Cisco says, Billion Dollars, Baby

Cisco Systems® and the Ministry of Communication and Information Technology, Government of India, announced today that they will collaborate to support India's National E-Governance Plan. Cisco will also support Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited's (BSNL) telecom network evolution by establishing Asia Pacific's first IP Next Generation Network (NGN) Lab for BSNL in Chennai. To support these two initiatives, Cisco will invest a combined US $10 million.

Why wouldn't one be happy about that deal. After all, India's endeavors to go beyond the markets of Shanghai, just got renewed. I am specially happy about the first IP Next Generation Network going to be setup at Chennai. That was just enough reason to make a blog post. As Om Malik states, With that one giant poker chip, the company has shifted the focus from India as outsourcer to India as an innovator. It is also a realization that India is a big market, perhaps not as big as China, but equally lucrative in the long run.

Why would no one lure Universal Studios to invest a $500 million dollars in Kollywood. Wouldn't that be so cool ?

Cho Ramaswamy, currently the only

Cho Ramaswamy, currently the only political observer in Tamil Nadu talks about his views on the recent protests against Kushboo.

From Hindu's Business Line -

"While I do not agree with what she has said, she is entitled to her views. Now those who are agitating against her have accused her of having defamed or maligned Tamil women. In her article she has not said a single word about Tamil Nadu or the women of Tamil Nadu. Her opinions were generally about women. What the agitators accuse of her saying is totally wrong. India Today has been publishing surveys again and again which claim to record the opinion of women of Tamil Nadu. And in these surveys they claim about 20-25 per cent of these women say they are for free sex or pre-marital sex. Now I don't know whether this is truly their opinion or that of the person doing the survey."
Coming down heavily on the serials aired by TV channels, Ramaswamy said these TV channels "regularly put on air serials which malign women in a very devastating manner. Nobody seems to care, perhaps because they are being telecast by Sun TV. So while neither India Today nor Sun TV has been targeted, Khushboo was chosen perhaps because she is a soft target; and they somehow wanted to claim a victory."

Thats the way to go. I enjoy this man for this sheer objectivity in commenting !! Given the state of affairs, we need a dozen CHOs.

Two Sides of a Story

If this side of the story is like this, from India's National Newspaper dt Sat Oct 1, 2005 -

The photographs of young men and women drinking and couples kissing were published to reveal the `immoral' goings-on at the party. The odd thing was that no one in these pictures was "scantily clad" (as alleged by the police) but the affair exposed the hypocrisy of a tabloid and tabloidising section of the press that regularly publishes `scantily clad' and suggestive pin-ups of film actresses as a circulation booster.
the other side also has its own qualms, from The People's Paper dt Oct 15, 2005 -
The moral jury stepped out in Chennai last week to pronounce that five star hotels are ‘holy’ places where police cannot enter. The jury was appalled at the mention of the word ‘obscenity’ and, pray, what bar licence? The conservatives in the city breathed fire, the jury was not concerned. For them, the rest could go to hell. The Chennai Police, they said, had no right to suspend the hotel’s licence.
But in Chennai, it’s not a big deal to find an escort these days. Just hang around the pubs and the discotheques. If not, there are classifieds to fall back on. One ad reads thus: “If you are an independent escort and willing to provide a full service, please contact me.”
Mylapore might be continents away from Malibu but Chennai’s hit the fast lane. To where, is a question the moral jury should decide as it careens between police stations and discos.

By now way this is to compare the quality of newspapers. Just extreme samples from an entire gamut of perspectives. To which extreme of this spectrum you belong, is a priceless question to your value system ?

Cinema Paradiso expands

The Chennaites crib of not being able to watch the Best of Hollywood from being in Chennai. Cinema Paradiso and Tik Tak are two good stores that I know which rent DVDs. Sadly they both are located at Abiramapuram. I am not sure it there is a better shop somewhere at Adyar or Egmore.

They may not supply all of the best but its a good start. When they opened up they charged more than 100 bucks as a single DVD's rent. Seems like they have reduced the rental since then and they have also expanded to Hyderabad and Bangalore. I am not sure of what prompted them to expand in Calcutta instead of Mumbai where they might get some good market.

Santhosh, the guy who, alongwith Vaan Nila Tharum fame Richard started Cinema Paradiso talks to The Telegraph on their recent expansion to Calcutta and also drops few names here and there. From the interview -

“Kamal Haasan, (A.R.) Rahman and I used to exchange DVDs, before I started off my parlour with just 300 titles from a tiny place in Chennai’s Alwarpet in 2003 along with my partner Richard,” recalls the 32-year-old software engineer from Trichy.
Collecting DVDs went hand-in-hand with his camera cameos, first during a stint with Mani Ratnam’s cinematographer P.C. Shriram, and then with Hungarian lens ace Vilmos Zsigmond, who had worked with Spielberg in Close Encounters of the Third Kind. “I collaborated with Zsigmond in Rush Hour in Hollywood and then also worked in Playing by Heart, starring Sean Connery and directed by Willard Carrol,” says Santhosh, who is set to return with his camera to the Ratnam stable soon. Cinema Paradiso has remained a parallel passion, though.

With DVDs rental lowering down to Rs.50, I am happy chennaites would crib too much and Nilu doesn't have to travel so far to watch Mulholland Dr.

H1 Blues

Not exactly the right title. But there are a couple of interesting stuff happening.

H1BEES

Srikanth's new album, H1Bees, is all set to release on the 10th September, 2005. Apart from being a blogger Srikanth is an avid musician and has already released music albums including his own invention, Curry Rock, a genre that brings back nostalgic memoirs of Chennai. I have enjoyed listening to his previous albums. The best per me is his album on Bharathiyaar songs named Mahaakavi. Do listen to the sample clip and let him know your views. He will be more than interested in listening to you.

biloxi blues

Evam's new theatre release, Biloxi Blues, is currently being staged in Chennai. Going back to their roots of Neil Simon's semi-autobiographical play, EVAM is back in news. After their superhit play, Badal Sircar's Indrajit, Biloxi Blues, is also set to become a gate-crasher. Read Hindu's review here.

Happy Birthday Dude !! - Madras

chennai
[Thanks - The Madras Day]

It's ironical that 'Chennai' is celebrating Madras Day today. More ironically it completes a year of years. Don't worry to calculate it is the 365th year[ending] since it was founded in 1639.

It was on that day, in that year, that a sliver of land, where the Fort. St. George and the secretariat now exist in Madras - now called Chennai, was sold to the East India Company.
The deal was struck by Francis Day, his 'dubash' Beri Thimmappa, and their superior, Andrew Cogan, with the local Nayaks.
It is believed that this deal was made on this day and these three men are considered to be the founders of this city.
The city has been witness to many firsts in India and been home to great men, institutions and developments. And such a day should focus on the city, its history, its past and its present.
I can never say I'm frantically attached to Chennai/Madras. It's much more to that. Like others who love Madras, I've just love my home town. It's the most lovable place in the world. I've been badly missing Chennai for sometime now and it was only last week, I was intending to ramble here on that. I was planning to list down the things that I miss in Madras. One of the prominent things is the cofee, the crowd and ofcourse the Marghazhi Kutcheri. Even today, while driving back, I was listening to Sanjay Subramaniam and felt so nostalgic. And as the festival season fast approaches the crowd on T.Nagar, the diwali shopping and above all that the friends and folks out there. Anyway let this not end as a crib.

The 365th Madras Day celebrations began last year. A meeting was also held at Amethyst where I rightfully missed to meet Rushdie and ofcourse Padma. More to that Ramnath did say that I missed a lovely lecture by S. Muthiah on Madras aka Chennai. I still repent for that when I read a Rushdie's book.

Whoever says, I love Madras, raise your hands !! Here's mine.

Digitizing Chennai Theatres

The negative will be changed in digital HD 5 format and encrypted and put on the centralised server. It will then be up-linked to satellite. The theatre concerned will receive the signals, which in turn will go into the local server and then on to a digital projector. The digital projector would be used for screening on a bright background screen.
Pyramid Saimira's idea for digital projection of movies seems very very interesting. Not only it reduces the hardship of actually moving the 'Potti' around but also a huge savings in printing cost. On the contrary, I don't see this idea of satellite uplinking to reduce piracy as the Pyramid Saimira company claims. BTW, what is S.Ve.Shekhar and Madan doing in the advisory panel.

If only this is successful, its another baby step towards better quality of cinema in theatres[not content though].

Triple E- Examining Entrance Exams

When Tamil Nadu government, served an order to cancel the entrance examinations for Medical/Engineering collge seats, I thought of it as a welcoming move. It was certainly one. The idea of taking the entrance exams out, was to help the rural students to be on par with the urban lot who have abundant oppurtunities of getting trained for entrance examinations. This certainly gives an upper hand for the city folks over the rural dudes. The number of Agarwal's and Subramaniam's are more in urban areas to teach entrance exams syllabus for a hefty sum of money. So you see this line of TVS scooties and BSA SLRs being parked in KK Nagar even from 4 am in the morning while the rural folks are still busy milking their cows.

But we have to admit, when there are different standards of education system like the CBSE, Matric and State Board in India, it's tough to decide the right candidates for Medical/Engg colleges without having a common examination. The entrance examination which was in effect was doing this balancing very effectively. However it had these pitfalls of not enough entrance exam training centers for the rural students. What's welcoming out of this whole hungama, is that the high court, apart from dismissing the govt's order, has sent out a positive note to come up with a 'third formula' of cleansing these differences in education system/entrance examinations which would be help the ovehaul the system in the long run. Atleast, it made me believe that we have a few 'Rules Ramanujams', alive and kicking.

TN govt walks away with the cake for bringing this debate to life, High Court gets a applause for streamlining the debate and at the end, I only wish the winners are the students. Not trying to be cliched here but I still strongly believe in the system of government and law in country while I hate censors for films. Kind of double standards but then isn't this a paradoxical world ?

Evam's Indrajit

evam_indrajit.jpg

After a successful production of Barefoot in the Park, Evam group returns to their roots. Evam's name was derived from a Badal Sircar's play, Evam Indrajit. A Bengali play translated by Girish Karnad was considered to be a milestone of Modern Indian Theatre.

Having seen their last play, I am sure that Evam can make this challenging play into an interesting venture. Although I miss being in Chennai, I'm hoping for a nice review of the play which is scheduled to be staged from the coming weekend for six shows.

Here's the schedule for Evam Indrajit -

Date & Time On 4th, 5th, 11th, 12th June 2005 07:15 pm. On 5th, 12th June 2005 02:00 pm. Venue Sivagami Petachi Auditorium, near Alwarpet Lifestyle Showroom. Alternatively you can also call Evam Helpline @ 98402 22363 to block tickets.

While Chennai, around me, was buzzing around me with marathon activity, I was busy shouting at a Saravana Bhavan on charging 5 bucks extra for a masala dosa. Sure the masala dosa was tasty but I was so hungry to hog 2 dosas and get done with my hunger.

After a strong filter coffee, while crossing the road, I saw a gentle man with Temenos Chennai Marathon TShirt on his way back home. Excuse me, I burped. Thats being lazy, for you.

Evam's Barefoot in the Park

[Pic: johnnymercer.com]

Prasanna, my friend, who directed the short film Ini Bhayam Illai(which was reviewed here before), has now joined the Evam theatre group and had invited us for a special screening of the film Barefoot in the Park. The film was originally a Broadway play by Neil Simon. Evam, who have stormed into the theatre scene for a year or so in Chennai, are staging this same play in February. As a curtain raiser and a marketing move, we bloggers including Kiruba, Chandrachoodan, Chenthil and Narsi were invited for the screening of the flick Barefoot in the Park, in The Park Hotel.

Keeping other details to the fag end, here is all about what the play/movie about. Neil Simon, known for his sensibly humorous plays, scripts Barefoot in the park as a gag that happens in a small brownstone apartment of New York. What starts with the romantic musings of a newly wed couple runs into hilarious family affair and ends up barefoot in the park. This Broadway play was adapted as a movie with the same name in 1967. Robert Redford, who played the role of Mr.Paul Bratter in the movie, also starred for the same role in the play.

Jane Fonda as Mrs.Corie Bratter simply rocks. And it's on her the movie rests upon. It is her innocence and her free spirited character that gets their family life in ruins. Those tight French kisses and romantic intonations would have made her a demi-goddess back in 1967. So romantic and hilarious when she says, "For a lawyer you are some good kisser". Similarly, in the beginning, after five continuous days in the honeymoon suite of a hotel, the newly wed husband starts to his work. Wife Corie, walks with just a slick small shirt to the elevator where her husband boards the crowded elevator, says "Thank you, Mr. Dooley. Next time you're in New York, just call me up". That clueless expression on Robert Redford's face was amazing. Yo!! We just burst out with laughter and from then on the same tempo gets maintained till the end.

As the couple's apartment is situated on the fifth floor of an elevator less apartment, the gag is about the people coming up with lack of breath to the couple's apartment. The telephone guy who comes up to the newly rented house, gets frustrated by the walking up five floors and says, "My name's Harry Pepper if you ever have any trouble with line, do me a favor, don't ask for Harry Pepper." Corie's mom who comes to visit her daughter newly rented apartment, literally has a stroke and replies annoyingly, "If only there was a knife shop in the apartment basement, I would have killed myself instead of climbing all these stairs". Charles Boyer as Victor Velasco adds more flavor to the humor. The climax is of course dramticised and comical, similar to that of Michael Madhana Kamarajan. Barefoot in the park is a feel good movie and even watched nearly 38 years of it's release it seems convincingly relevant.

I did think, before the movie, that if only I watched the movie, I may not be pushed to watch the play. I got it all wrong. Those complex sequences of stairs and the witty remarks make me curious to see how EVAM would unleash the play on stage. I am also extra curious to see the act of the heroine, Corie Bratter, for its around her the play is twined. Looks like the part would be played by a member of Girish Karnad's theatre group.

Though I haven't seen any of Evam's plays till date, I have known them by their publicity which hit my office notice boards during their performance of Woody Allen's Death. Combined with their prime sponsors, Royal Sundaram group, they have put together a wonderful marketing effort to get back the awareness of theatre among the Chennaites. Karthik Kumar [remember the Alai Payuthey's American mappillai] and Sunil started Evam after their course at Mudra Institute of Communications. They are probably trying to take back the theatre from the Jollna-n-Jibba clad, self-proclaimed cerebral groups and give it to the yuppie MNC guys who do nothing big than watching numerous nameless Hollywood flicks in multiplexes. That by itself is a noble virtue and I am personally interested to watch their play even if they haven't screened the movie for us. If only they keep level-headed with this motive for a couple of years, Chennai would get the grasp of theatre and we will see more theatre groups emerging which would pump up the theatre business.

Here's the commercial info - Barefoot in the Park is staged at Sivagami Pethachi auditorium near the TTK road on the 1st, 2nd and 3rd weekends of this month. To pick up tickets call 98842 77338.

Saarang 2005 - Images

Kurt Cobain on the Tees
[More here...]

Saarang 2005 which just went by had some cool moments that would be recorded in the official photographer's camera. But here are some Saarang images that I clicked. I personally liked to click them because the pictures have an amateurish flavor as you can see. And these were clicked outside the OAT [Open Air Theatre] where the pro shows were conducted. They frisk chewing gums to cameras at the entrance of OAT and hence I didn't want to take along my camera inside.

Have put in captions for each of the images. They were selling a photo CD of Saarang 2005 at the venue, which had images shot during all the professional shows and the crowd of Saarang. It had pics that were something like the Spirit of Saarang and was just costing 20 bucks. If I can get hold of that CD, will upload some professional show pictures taken from the terrace of the OAT, for those who missed Saarang 2005. Do let me know if you enjoyed the pics. Also will write about Prasanna's Jazz show.

Thanks to the Google Picasa. As Google released Picasa 2, last week, I downloaded and to my suprise found it a lot better than what I had expected. So the picture page that you will be seeing is a Picasa generated page. All I did was to download the images from the camera and clicked on export to webpage. Vroooomm. It's Done. Great software as it even digged my entire computer to bring out pictures that I was assuming to be mis-placed. Try Picasa for your PC.

Saarang 2005 Round-up !!

The ambience is electrifying. The lights are dazzling. The dudes and the dudettes are simply classy and make Britney spears and Orlando Bloom have re-look on their fashion sense. There is appropriate security. The crowd rocks and there are no in-decent events reported. Saarang is cool. Not great, though.

There is a thin air of null and void that makes this years Saarang look a little dull. It's the audience who have added color to this year's Saarang. I ain't concluding because there is still a cool performance of Guitar Prasanna's today in the Jazz show. I am not the complaining type but it's just plainly visible for any Saarang frequenter. The organisers and the volunteers are the ones who have worked hard to make Saarang a success but then the selection of performers (inter college and pro-shows) should have been done with a little more care.

On the Bindaas Park, Hutch has a huge team of guys and girls who keep conducting the age old games. Last year, this Hutch team rocked. They didnt do all the gimmicks like now. All they had was a small jam machine that was re-mixing songs with a DJ and the crowd loved to dance, dance and dance baby. Now, not only they bore the on-lookers but they also seem bored by doing this year-after-year. I am sure this is not Hutchs marketing issue but they could have selected the ambassadors better. It was a common opinion and not just mine. How many times will we dance as a couple by folding the sheets of paper untill we step out? Change the game dudes and see the fun. This is not only true for the Hutch stall but also for the Nokia stall. Nokia, is the prime sponsor this year for the Saarang and has made sure all that they execute the promotion well.

Decibels 2005

The decibels show(inter-college western music contest) is one of the best things that happen at the Saarang. Not to forget Cluedo and the dramatics. I managed to watch the pre-lims and the finals. On the prelims conducted in the Bindaas Park, the teams either wasted time in setting up their musical instruments or talking about the music they loved to play. These days, most teams play own compositions which are sometimes better than the professionals. A band called Black Legions(I think!!), who had very little time to sing in the pre-lims because their lead guitar went out of shape, played good rock-and-roll of yester years. Their first song called Crash Course to Rock N Roll which was an own composition was note-worthy.

On the finals, it was Guitar Prasanna and another guy(who arranged the Jesus Christ Super Star in Chennai) who were the judges. A female singer Nandita sang a Van Halen number which was clearly one of the best. Powder in Ash Tray, a band with amazing Vocals and great leads, walked away the with Decibels 2005 award.

Light Music 2005

Thiruda Thiruda might have failed in the box-office but it doesnt mean the movie and its music would be forgotten. Thee Thee song from Thiruda Thiruda and Minsaara Poove from Padayappa were the popular ones. They were sung twice by two teams. Also Konjam Nilavu was attempted the MCC. That girl from MCC sang the movie so stlyishly that I was thinking she might win the best female vocalist prize.

Songs like Thee Thee and Konjam Nilavu are highly synthesized and its tough to reproduce them with just intruments and a keyboard. If only the college teams would agree with this, they might sing Illayaraja numbers and walk away with the awards. I am not tipping that AR Rahman music is tough to be re-produced. But with live audience and live sounds, for an amateur it might be a little tough to get that perfection.

Whereas Minsaara Poovey which has a cool combo of classical and synth music was welcomed by the audience. Also there is huge scope in the song to display voice modulations. I would anytime advice people to sing Megham Kottatum, Vannam Konda Vennilavey or even Illamai Itho Itho to walk away with the prize.

Rehana, AR Rahmans sister and Saagar, Devi Shri Prasad's brother alongwith Keith Peters were there to judge the music show. Rehana rightly said that the sound system was tuned for western music show and thats probably why the teams had tough time tuning the instruments.

Will detail more on Saarang 2005 and KK light music show alongwith Prasanna's Be the Change show, tomorrow. Also will upload pictures, sleeping the digi cam, by the weekend.

Kaanom Pongal !!

That title wasn't a spell mistake. Intended. It's a day when people usually are out on the sea bathing, eating pannju mittai, going gala rounds on the raatinams, teens driving supersonic bikes with their girlfriends in the pillions and hiding faces with dupatta on the east coast road, people throwing 'rastali' bananas at the orangutangs in Vandalur and what not. Many of them were missing in action, today.

Was driving by the Marina shore today and to my surprise saw there were hardly anyone for the pongal celebrations on the beach. There wasn't even the a crowd that comes down on a weekend. And as I took a 'U' turn on the war memorial and came back through the Napier bridge, just can't beat the thought of Aayitha Ezhuthu climax scenes. Stopped the bike on a corner of the bridge, looked back at it and took off again. Drove along the Kamarajar salai to reach Santhome and then the Elliots beach. Hardly any crowd there at 5 pm. Gosh, couldn't believe my sight. Went near the shore after parking the bike. Desperately wanted to touch the water but it was restricted today. The bajji stalls are now moved far from the shores and it looked that they were the ones seriously hit by Tsunami attack.

There was even very low turn-out on the Chennai Book Fair. Was roaming around from 12:00 to 3:00 in the noon and it wasn't too crowded as the other day. Only on such a day you can leisurely browse books and also get a good glimpse of the fair. Leaving my outfits, I gave off everything else in the book fair for buying books. Now, I have to find a place in my house to arrange them.

Some book thats I bought today - 6 out-of-print books of Sujatha from Thirumagal Nilayam(mostly compilations of columns that he wrote for Kanayaazhi), Gnani's Kandathai Sollugiren (columns that he wrote for India Today) and Sundara Ramaswamy's Oru Puliyamarathin Kathai. Need to buy - S.Ramakrishan's Ulaga Cinema(World Cinema) and Upa Pandavam, Ashokamithran Katuraigal, Aathmanaam Poetry, Jeyamohan's shortstory collection and thousands of such nice ones. The bookfair will wind-up by tomorrow.

Saarang 2005

Guitar Prasanna
[Pic:eer-music]

Chennai is yet to take a breather from the crowded book fair but then there's no time. Saarang 2005, the cultural mishmash of IIT Madras is happening again. I shouldn't be saying it's happening. Because as the IITians says, it isn't an event. Saarang is a state of mind. And this yearly festival starts from 21st Jan 2005 and goes on till the 26th. This is an inter-college show and so the youth is outta there. A gentle breeze after the rather dry december music festival and the book fair.

I've been a regular to this yearly event for close to a decade and it gets better every time. Be it the pro-shows or the arrangements or the fashion statement, Saarang simply rocks. It makes you feel young and yearn for those good-old college days. A true extravaganza. Last year, Saarang was devastating. Euphoria and Strings created a magic on the last day and I could still remember the whole stadium singing Maa Thuje Salaam. Also Decibels, intre-college western music show was the best of all the years. And I hope this year it will become even tougher. You also have this usual nice to watch Ad-Zap, Jam and creative writing competitions, not to forget the popular Mr and Ms Saarang.

This year's schedule is out. For the pro-shows KK(the same Kakkha Kakkha KK) will be performing light music on 24th. Orange Street alongiwth Moksha will perform the rock show on 22nd Jan. There comes a suspense which I nearly guessed(rather wanted to happen). Guitar Prasanna will be performing again for the Jazz show named, Be the Change. Be the Change is actually the latest album released by Prasanna in the mid 2004. He along with Jeff Coffin on sax, Kai Eckhardt on bass guitar and Derico Watson on drums will perform the show. During Saarang 2000, he played along with Alphonso Johnson. I had been to that show and I must say it was exhilarating.

Guitar Prasanna is well known to Chennai music fans for his carnatic compositions with guitar. I did like his albums on Jazz than the carnatic ones. He was probably inspired by the Miles Davis school of jazz and took over jazz from blues. He owns more credit for spreading the reach of carnatic music in the American music circles. With Illayaraja his last work was for Vaanavilley in Ramana. He played those enchanting acoustics for Yej Jo Hai Tera of Swades for A R Rahman. I am definetly there for this show and also for the KK's light music.

Catch up with the never ending State-of-Mind Saarang next week. If you are coming do let me know and we can plan along.

Looking ahead 2005

This ain't an astrological predicition but might prove logical. The new year did start off with a sad note due to the heavy loss of life and property Tamil Nadu is facing right now. Last night, the Kamarajar Salai, the road that runs parallel to the marina beach was closed. This place is usually the epicenter of new year celebrations in Chennai. A candle light prayer near the Gandhi Statue, last evening, was a noble gesture.

The star hotels also closed down their new year celebrations. It must have been a heavy loss to them but again it was a very appreciative and responsible move. Even the huge cracker bursts at the stroke of midnight were missing except for a few. Places of Workship replaced sevas with prayers.

Overall, it was a come together by the residents of Chennai, in specific, to remember the doomed and the homeless victims of Tsunami attack. Let the sad note drift away to no-man's land because this integrity by itself is a epitome of the bright future lying before us in the year ahead !!

Say that again, Tsunami

Marina Bridge.jpg
[Sea water flowing in Chennai roads. Pic: hindu.com]

So it happened and it happened just after all the newspapers and weeklies have bragged about the year that was. The most devastating incident happened during the last week of the year making people denounce new year celebration.

At 7:30 am on the Sun TV, it was officially announced that there was an earth quake at Chennai. From then on it was a roller coaster ride. People were seen on the streets talking and talking about the Chennai's second trembling earthquake. I switched to the sunday channel programs as usual. It was at 9:50 am when I recieved an SMS from my friend who said the sea water was flowing into the city and I thought it was just overstatement. And only when the Flash News started to roll, I believed. The first thing that stuck was the summer flick, The day after tomorrow.

At 10:30 am when I drafted the previous post, I had no clue that there will be such a huge impact. A reporter said Tsunami hits chennai on the NDTV news channel. Tsunami, what?. And Tsunami became the most used word of the year atleast here in Chennai/Tamil Nadu. I initally thought they had just a named the tremor attack like naming tornados in the US. I was completely wrong.

At 3:00 pm when I was at the Besant Nagar beach, there were around 3,000 people standing in the shores and watching the sea. The Earthquake and Tsunami at Chennai had taken thousands of lifes into the sea and it looked as peaceful as ever.

Over the Adayar bridge the water level has doubled, a sight that I have never personally seen before on that bridge. When I pulled my bike over the bridge, I could see a batches of huts that were half submerged in the water flow.

This is probably the most ravaging incident that hit Chennai and Tamil Nadu in the whole in my lifetime and as said in the previous post, this incident would be talked, blogged and narrated a thousand times in the years to come.

Intestingly Writer Sujatha's short story called Nagar Vallam[City Round-up] talks about a group of people visiting Chennai Triplicane on a boat because part of Chennai city is submerged over by the tidal waves. The come there by a boat to see the places where their fore-fathers lived. The story appeared on the Sci-Fi series written by Sujatha in Kalki weekly.

Here's is what wiki says about the Killer Tsunami

A tsunami (from Japanese ?? meaning wave in port) is one or a series of ocean surface waves that occur after a large earthquake (having a vertical component of movement), seaquake, volcanic activity, slumps, or meteorite impacts in or near the sea.

In deep water, the energy of a tsunami is constant, a function of its height and speed. Thus, as the wave approaches land, its height increases while its speed decreases. A tsunami has a very long wave length (in the order of 100 km), which makes it act as a shallow-water wave. While in deep water a person at the surface of the water would probably not notice, the wave can increase to a height of 30 m and more as it approaches the coastline.

Tsunami prediction remains an imperfect science. Although the epicenter of a large underwater quake and the probable tsunami arrival times can be quickly calculated, it is almost always impossible to know whether massive underwater ground shifts have occurred, resulting in tsunami waves.

The Day Before Tomorrow

The ground beneath my feet trembled. The place was shaking all over. My comp fell down from the table. The wall clock just slipped down to hit my head straight. It had 6:45 am on it's hands and it stopped. I just realised it was a earthquake and quickly opened the door and ran faster and faster. It shook and I rolled down the stairs. Down and Down. Rolling.

Well, that was just a an exaggeration. I could possibly have a nightmare of sorts today just like this one. But truly it trembled. Just a little.

One unassuming december sunday morning was going to be an unforgettable one, specially for the ones who lived in Chennai. As I was about to wake up, this morning it was a feeling that someone was just playing with the cot. There was a thin shake and it stayed for a while. Even before I realised it was a earthquake it was over. It lasted just for a minute before it died down taking away so many lives all over Asia alongwith it.

Was in Adyar today and took a stroll after the quake to see if I was the one who was insane to think it was a earthquake. I understood I wasn't alone. However, I didn't comprehend the loss until it was announced in the televisions. Had been to the Besant Nagar beach now to see what had happened to the Chennai's proud asset. The beach memorial where Chennai Blogger meets are held is just so close to the sea. The original shores aren't too be seen and the beaches(Marina, Besant Nagar, Santhome and Thiruvanmiyur) have become museum pieces. People are coming in hundreds to watch the sea take over the shores.

This title doesn't hold a connection to the day after tomorrow movie but the day before tomorrow(it's today...come on) will be remembered down the memory lane. Sometimes Headline News happens just beneath you without you realising it is one.

That very moment

I have blogged about accidents and traffic in Chennai before, this is one more of that category.

Couple of days back, in a suburb of Chennai, while me and my friend were driving back on a two-wheeler, there was crowd in the middle of the road. A man's body lying there. We searched for the head. No head.

Next day in my office this was the talk-of-the-day. Looks like he was run over by a watertank lorry. We know that watertank lorries are the mobile God-Of-Dead in Chennai. But this one was truly heart crunching. Imagine that doomed man's thoughts just when he was alive under the wheels of that lorry. One moment and all his hopes, dreams, family and career boomed out.

No Preaching. A suggestion, Drive Slow.

IIT Madras - Lighting up a life

On Friday evening, the stars shined brighter over the sky just to make up for the rain that poured few weeks back. Two weeks back on a Friday, it poured like hell and the music show named Light up a life, organized by the IIT Madras Atma charity wing was postponed. This week it happened at the Open Air Theatre of IIT. And it happened with full josh.

Gangai Amaran's musical evening started exactly on the shceduled time. That's something which happens only for some of the carnatic kutcheris in Chennai. And we know how Gangai Amaran can get the pulse of the crowd so fast. He did. From 7 in the evening till 10:30 it was sheer music. Music of all kinds Bhaghavathar, Kannadasan, A R Rahman, Vidyasagar, Ghazal, Hindi and Telugu film music. What reverberated even after the show were Illayaraja's numbers that occupied the main theme of the show.

SPB Charan has the yesteryear SPB's voice. Remember the number Then Sindhuthey Vaanam, Slightly feminine, very SPB. SPB Charan has that exact voice. And fortunately, like his dad he could dwell in any octave so profoundly. Some evergreen numbers that amazed me were Sankarabharanam and Sorgam Madhuviley. Added to it was his rendering to Manmadha Rasa. Seemed like SPBs version of the song, fantastic variation to Shankar Mahadevan's original rendering.

The final medley lasted for more than 15 minutes where SPB Charan, Venkat Prabhu and the whole singing group were catching up on each other like a competition. The song that started all was Cheena Thaana and finally ended with Chinna Pasanga Nanga [Aruvadai Naal]. And as expected at the end, Gangai Amaran finished it with the Malar Polla Manam Vendum song that's broadcasted everyday morning in Vijay TV.

IBM who was the sponsor of the show gave away goodies to the audience. Software as goodies? The last thing you would expect from a musical show. Yeah, they gave away a whole bunch of CDs that consisted of a enterprise edition of DB2 ver 8.1 [one that was looking to download from the net], Lotus domino and Web Sphere studio's evaluation edition. Of course, the brochures that they gave away were finally flying high, as rockets. We know our guys, right.

Contradicting Anbe Sivam

Mylapore Kapaleeswarar Temple
[pic: kapaleeswarar.com]

Yesterday, I spent a warm evening at the Mylapore Kapaleeswarar Temple. This is the first time I had been to the temple since the consecration happened on August 30th 2004. To visit a temple within the first forty days of its consecration is tantamount to performing a Ashwamedha Yaga. I missed it anyway. Mylapore still remains/will remain to be the center of spiritual chennai. Not much has changed around the temple except for the new bhavans and hotels that have mushroomed. However, the roadside shop near the theradi still gives away tasty bajjis of all types.

After the kumbhabishekam, the gopurams glitter in the twilight with the backdrop of a bluish sky. Couldn't take a shot as I didn't have my digital camera. Usually I love the gopurams that have lost their paints which give them a antique look and re-itrating that truth stands tall over time. However, this mylapore temple has one of the finest gopurams in the city and I did bask that same pleasure even with the finest of paints.

That new red neon board fixed in the middle of the gopuram said, Anbe Sivam. Wow !! It meant a world to me. For Hinduism, isn't to be seen as a religion. Its a way of life. Anbe Sivam is a much profound explanation to that definition. The ideology of Shiva, the theology of Hinduism all encompassed in just two words.

Inside the temple, near the sanctum sanctorum, the white cardboard read, Non-Hindus Not Allowed. Ah!! Red alert. With all that Anbe Sivam philosophy up the gopurams, this board with just a few feet away contradicts. It hurts. This is the second time I'm boring this over in the blog. The last time I vented this out was while I had been to the Madurai Temple. Why wouldn't this be taken out may be a question to the believers who have understood the Hindu school of thought.

The Diwali that just went by

Giving a live commentary of deepavali is getting a little boring. Thats even to me but I just can't resist this one.

The fireworks stuff, I think just got better over the years. South India has really adopted the crack the crakers in the night from the north over the last couple of decades. Tonight was a gala night as the skies lighted with the colors of fireworks. Sounds everywhere. Near ones, distant ones, echoed ones, lighted ones and what not.

Six years back, on a diwali evening, when me and my friend were driving desperately to Woodlands Drive-In, it was just zero visibility due to crackers, over T.Nagar and we just prayed not to bump on some poor pedestrian. Tonight wasn't a similar one. The visibility was quite normal. Some kids say that in schools, their teachers were highly dis-couraging them of bursting crackers due to pollution. With half of the kids having this excuse and the other half glued to their television sets watching Baba and Azhagiya Theeye, the crackers have certainly lost a lil bit of their charm.

On televisions, Kamal Hasan ruled the day. Jaya TV's 3 hour long show named Kalakka Povathu...Kamal, where Kamal had several guests like SPB, Chitra, Manorama and many others visiting him and sharing their experiences of working with him. All this and they also rendered some nicest songs. SPB sang the all-time hit, Kamban Yemaandaan and had Kamal to do lip sync for that. It was nearly perfect and SPB said this was a kind of soul sharing which he and Kamal had. Goosebumps. By popular expectation, Kamal sang that fantastical Anbe Sivam number in the end. Can't have ended it better.

Trisha on a special interview was completely cool and seemed to be all herself. After a long time it was like witnessing a lead girl from the tinsel world who could shed all those fantasies surronding her and could talk sense. While talking about her Aayitha Ezhuthu experience she remembered how Mani Ratnam, to keep the crew's spirit high, wore a life jacket and dived into the beach along with Sidharth and her during the shoot of Hey !! Goodbye Nanba. Long sentence that was.

Anniyan Vikram was on the ECR roads waving Happy Deepavali to strangers and giving them a sweet surprise. His long hair also says Anniyan is still on sets. Let's hope they can make it to pongal. On Baba, Rajini is busy using that sixth mantra. Baba...Cinema Cinema.

Pattu Pavadai strikes back

Cinderella Pattu Pavadai
[Pic - chennaionline.com]

I was expecting this article quite sometime back on Hindu about the Cinderella Pattu Paavaadai[silk skirt] of RMKV Silks which is THE sensation of this year's deepavali.

Cinderella Pattu Pavadai has Cinderella's fairy tale story twined in silk on the borders of the skirt. The latest ad with the young girl in a green Cinderella pattu pavadai is a big hit, already. Ramya had a post on this sometime back.

Young school girls are said to be crashing the gates of RMKV to have a look at the pattu pavadai. Priced around 1500-3000 bucks the orders are overwhelming and if you are planning to get one for your kid this deepavali, you might not. My colleague who wanted to get her daughter this fairytale silk skirt, found the current delivery date might be aroud 20th November. Book your orders for Pongal, now.

Did someone say fashion gets recycled ?. We are getting back to where we were before. This one is a good comeback.

Footprints 2004 - A Runaway Success

With over 250 young aspiring film makers, television achors, news readers and all other available professions in media, the chennai version of Footprints 2004 was a roaring success, yesterday. Usually in such day-long seminars, either just one session would be the highlight or every other program is as boring as the other. But the dudes at Symbiosis Institute of Mass Communication did bring in the variety at the seminar which made the whole day whiz past us in minutes.

K Balachander, who inaugrated the seminar said, did come with a written speech something our present day film makers lack. Though it was a short speech and he had to leave, he did give a good start by defining creativity and it's spread. It would been a pleasure to listen to him, more.

Krishnan Menon from the advertising giant Ogilvy and Mather, started off the first session named Does creativity in advertising kill or build brands ? He started off with the Simon says game and did get to the crux of the issue soon. He was probably the one who stuck to the topic thoroughly. Attribute it to the industry he comes from, Krishnan, was able to get the attention of the crowds so easily. His presentation had more ads than slides which probably made it seem so lively. Who doesn't love ads. It was with groups of such ads he distinguished between the good idea and bad idea, the strong idea and the weaker ones. Using the Hutch [Dog and The Kid] campaign, that O & M handled, he explained how a strong idea helps boost the brands. And finally, he did play a audio clip of clients abuse them in advertising through which he communicated, think before you jump. But jokes apart it was a session so gripping just like the ads.
