Srirangam in Shambles

Cauvery Overflow

Prabhu Venkatramani sends me pictures of Cauvery overflowing inside the town of Srirangam. Seems like after years of not-so-much-rain, this one has really affected the temple city. He also writes in the email that the electricity is non-existent for the last three days and the town has come to a standstill. Thats really bad to know. For more news on the floods, read from dinamalar.

Shucks !! What a deepavali this is turning out to be ?

With hundreds of small villages nearly submerged in water, why are the social work bloggers not starting a Srirangam Flood Relief Blog ? A flood is a flood wherever it happens. Right ?

  1. Guru, I know who you are taking a dig at but how fashionable it is for “those” to start a “Srirangam Flood Relief” blog? After all, the term Srirangam is not as hip as New Orleans :-)

  2. Ooh! I don’t remember seeing so much water in Cauvery. I have played cricket on that sand and saw some water only during Aadi-perukku.
(My dad has an apt. right on the banks of Cauvery in Srirangam area, poor occupants).

  3. Boss, everything depends on the coverage. Fashionable or else, its just that not a lot of ppl who are here have had news about everything. If someone on the ground in Srirangam/Trichy or even Chennai starts something, am sure its gonna have a domino effect like anything else in the recent past!

  4. It really looks like a devastating tragedy. That is what floods really do when they get going. I didn’t know there was such a category as “Social work bloggers” . A list should be displayed someone so that new bloggers can join if they like.Blogs should be issue based as well as personal.

  8. MOST OF THE COMMENTS AND OBSERVATIONS ARE BS. NO PROBLEM IN SRIRANGAM TOWN AS SUCH. PROBLEM WITH TIRUCHI TOWN. MOSTLY LOW LYING ARES ARE SUBMERGED - PARTICULARLY CONSTRUCTIONS WITH OUT PROPER PRECAUTIONS ETC. GOVT. HAS RESPONDED WELL AND SRIRANGAM IS QUITE CALM. POWER WAS NOT THERE JUST FOR 27 HRS. THIS IS A MESSAGE FROM A SRIRANGAM RESIDENT.

  15. Being from Srirangam (although not living there right now), this incident has left a mark on lot of my family back home. But from what i’ve gathered, it is not as bad as it sounds in the media. I think indians in general are people who can bounce back qucikly in terms of spirits, when they lose their property (not the case when they lose their friends/family). I am not trying to compare with anybody (unlike those e-mails comparing katrina and bombay and taking “pride” out of a situation that needed attention and help)

  17. You’re just really LAZY.. aren’t you? Expecting someone else to come and set up a blog? Sarcasm and sloth go so well together.

  18. Lazy is right. You feel strongly about this? Get off your tush and do something instead of whining and waiting for someone else to.
