Sujatha talks about THE BOSS

boss sivaji
[Image - Rajini Fans / Vikatan]

Sujatha is on the hot seat. With AVM announcing Rajini's next flick Sivaji, the media is already going ga-ga over even a trivia about the movie. Shankar has found an ideal script/dialogue writer with Sujatha to suit his endeavors. It's truly a favor for Shankar than for Sujatha.

This is Sujatha's 25th year in writing for cinema. Sujatha was shying away from the invitation to write for cinema until Kamal Hassan and K Balachander forced him in Ninaithaale Inikkum. In his interview to Kunguman on on the account of the silver jubliee year at cinema, Sujatha details on the scripting of Sivaji and concludes that the premise is new, both for Rajini and Shankar. Not just that but he also discloses how scripting is usually done by the kollywood biggies like Mani Ratnam and Kamalhassan. Pretty interesting interview and Sujatha is just too good in adding hype to the already hyped Sivaji.

If you didn't get to read the offline interview, I've uploaded it here, Page 1 & Page 2. Thanks Karthi for passing it across.

Srirangam in Shambles

Cauvery Overflow

Prabhu Venkatramani sends me pictures of Cauvery overflowing inside the town of Srirangam. Seems like after years of not-so-much-rain, this one has really affected the temple city. He also writes in the email that the electricity is non-existent for the last three days and the town has come to a standstill. Thats really bad to know. For more news on the floods, read from dinamalar.

Shucks !! What a deepavali this is turning out to be ?

With hundreds of small villages nearly submerged in water, why are the social work bloggers not starting a Srirangam Flood Relief Blog ? A flood is a flood wherever it happens. Right ?

Shankar ? A Legend ?

shankar
[Thanks Karthi]

Shankar's website, Director Shankar has a splash screen that displays the above picture. We are yet to decide if Shankar is legend or not but there is legend standing in the front of camera, called THE BOSS. Know who ?

Satyaraj, SJ Surya, Salman & Seattle

It's becoming colder in Seattle. Its raining, windy and pleasantly cold. The kind of iira nilam that one would love to live. They have been telling me that as winter coses it, you would be terrible out of mood, blame it on the absence of sun. But for me it's becoming the other way. I do enjoy the sun but the cold weather combined with semi-frequent coming of the rains. This evening it was so windy with rain drizzles that I had my spirits uplifted. A different kind of feeling, that for a moment, makes you forget projects, go-lives, status reports, MOMs and what not.

Offlate, I'm voraciously reading and unexpectedly all the books that were in a long library queue are just pouring in. Besides Ashokamitran's Katuraigal Part 1, I'm having Rusdhie's Shalimar the Clown on my left hand, Thomas Friedman's The World is Flat on my right hand and a lovely book that I wouldn't disclose now. I want to certainly write a post on that special book.

Saw SJ Surya's Ah Aha and namma Surya's Ghajini. Ah Aha was loud, ugly and a sick movie. I'm planning to protest against Rahman tuning music for this dude. He has literally screwed up all the songs with crass creativity and glaring colors. The wide angle close-up shot is an overkill. The completely unrelated sentiment scenes seems to be targeted the thaaikulams while he was busy exploring the midriff of Nila. Does he think we are a bunch of idiots, watching his movie ? Ellyei !!

Satyaraj's Englishkaran is one good movie in the recent times with some common sense. It's typically a late 80's flick with a storyline that we have seen a million times, Satyaraj's satirical comedy rocks. If you can mock at the several happenings of Kollywood and Tamil Nadu politics, with a rehashed storyline, you could cast Satyaraj and make it into a hit, like this. Though we have seen similar movies from Satyaraj, watching truly crappy films from kollywood this year, this was a good time pass. The voluptuous Namitha portrayed as an athlete and she actually runs 100 meters in a tar road before she dies of the kollywood classic poison, arali vedhai. Though I'm not for this nuisance, I'm holding from cursing too much as Namitha Fans Association might actually protest to burn printouts of lazygeek.net. I ain't ready for all that !!

Calling Amma !!

With all the storm blowing between the Kings of Bangalore, it's time for the Amma of Tamil Nadu to reach out and woo Infosys into Tamil Nadu. 500 acres near the ECR at government 'rates' would be enough to make Infosys shift headquaters to Chennai. We lost it once before, not anymore. Come on, Time to get Bangalored Chennaied !!

From Email to Gmail

If you are using GMAIL(and I presume you should be), skip reading this post. By now you should have seen the link from Gmail main page. Paul Buchheit, a Googler who was the primary GMAIL engineer, talks about the birth of email / gmail. Also hints about the next batch of GMAIL updates. Looks like they are trying to bring in the Folder concept, which I think sucks. And the increasing number GMAIL users using greasemonkey's script to delete mails must be pushing Google to get that feature included.

From the post, Guess what just turned 34? -

Of course that wasn't the only reason why I wanted to build Gmail. I rely on email, a lot, but it just wasn't working for me. My email was a mess. Important messages were hopelessly buried, and conversations were a jumble; sometimes four different people would all reply to the same message with the same answer because they didn't notice the earlier replies. I couldn't always get to my email because it was stuck on one computer, and web interfaces were unbearably clunky. And I had spam. A lot of it. With Gmail I got the opportunity to change email – to build something that would work for me, not against me.

Google nearing $100 billion mark-cap

Google's third quarter results released on Oct 20 is fueling its growth. It's shares nearly touched $100 billion before settling at $98 billion. This could probably a record of reaching $100 billion market cap than any other US company before. From Bloomberg -

Google Inc. approached $100 billion in market value and analysts rushed to raise their price estimates after the company's results soared past the most optimistic of expectations.
Analysts at three firms including Lehman Brothers Holdings Inc. said the stock may climb to $450 from today's $339.75. At that price, Google would have a value double that of Yahoo! Inc. and vault into the top 20 largest U.S. companies, worth more than Coca-Cola Co. and Wells Fargo & Co.
While it's a matter for the shareholders of Google to re-joice, this column from Slate named, Has Google Peaked?, which was written well before the results were announced, talks about the potential obstacles the company has to fight.
But if you live by advertising, you can die by advertising. If there were a downturn in the Internet ad market for any reason, Google wouldn't be able to meet Wall Street's expectations. Its stock, perhaps already inflated with a price-to-earnings ratio of close to 90, would lose some luster. (Yahoo!'s PE is in the 30s, and Microsoft's is in the 20s.) Google is well aware of this. In its latest quarterly report, the company warns that reduced ad spending "could seriously harm our business."

We all know its a function of trade cycle to bring down the value of an ever raising share price. While I'm positive, that Google's market share isn't a miracle, it still can out perform itself if the leaders are listening. Per the Slate column the biggest threat to Google is the percentage of revenue earned from internet advertising. Just a small drop in internet advertising by the companies and Google will be on it's way to get toppled. And that's probably why Google s working on several unconnected services other than internet search. Good Luck !!

Balachander's Nizhal Nijamakirathu

Hanumanthu

Watching K Balachander's Nizhal Nijamakirathu, few things cleared up. One - this is one of those movies that truly exploited Kamal's bharathanatyam talent. Two - We probably miss natural talents like Hanumanthu and Mouli in Kollywood, these days. Three - Other than the dancing part, Kamal smokes in every damn scene.

Offlate, I've been watching KB movies in a row. It all started with Jaathi Malli. I have questions on why Balachander directed the movie in the first place.. The movie sucked in very other aspect except for the interesting MadanBob /Dhamu sequences and Maragadamani's music. Then it was Kamal's Manmadaleelai, which was a mediocre effort by KB and Kamal, keeping in mind the classy films they were delivering at that time.

The storyline seems cliched now but in yesteryears it must have been a decently interesting one. More than the rape you-marry you story, it was the cast ensemble that elevated the pleasure of watching this flick. It had Kamal as a smoking communist with intelligent dialogues just like Sujatha's protagonist. Sarathbabu playing as usual, the sucker friend. Sumitra as the feminist and the classy Shoba playing her debut as a rich-dreams-poor-girl. These four characters alongwith Hanumanthu, Mouli and Oru veral Krishnarao make the entire movie cast. Its truly KB's talent to blend these characters in a fashion that makes the movie interesting.

Hanumanthu is a gem of an actor. Natural talent. Not a single shot he seemed to 'act'. The expression, body language and dialogue delivery was just perfect. I've seen him in other Mouli 's films but this was probably his finest performance. I've heard people talk about him but I'm not sure he was regarded as a classy actor in his time.

Though the entire film looks just like a stage drama, it was fun to watch Kamal play a semi-baddy. Kamal's characterisation reminded me of Prashant 'reverse-talking' role in Agathiyan's Kaathal Kavithai. If you could grab you hands on the video, you are certainly not wasting your time.

Cisco says, Billion Dollars, Baby

Cisco Systems® and the Ministry of Communication and Information Technology, Government of India, announced today that they will collaborate to support India's National E-Governance Plan. Cisco will also support Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited's (BSNL) telecom network evolution by establishing Asia Pacific's first IP Next Generation Network (NGN) Lab for BSNL in Chennai. To support these two initiatives, Cisco will invest a combined US $10 million.

Why wouldn't one be happy about that deal. After all, India's endeavors to go beyond the markets of Shanghai, just got renewed. I am specially happy about the first IP Next Generation Network going to be setup at Chennai. That was just enough reason to make a blog post. As Om Malik states, With that one giant poker chip, the company has shifted the focus from India as outsourcer to India as an innovator. It is also a realization that India is a big market, perhaps not as big as China, but equally lucrative in the long run.

Why would no one lure Universal Studios to invest a $500 million dollars in Kollywood. Wouldn't that be so cool ?

Run Lazy Run !!

And I ran, ran and ran. Haven't done something like this in the last few years. Per my self-assumed nick goes, I was always lazy enough to run on the treadmill. Even those wacky-techno-gizmos called walkman, CD player and mp3 player could only inspire me just a lil' bit. Last week, I was thinking about a blogpost to gather suggestions on Tamil songs for the Tread Mill. After all how many times could I listen to just Humma Humma, Uyirin Uyirey or the ultra cool Illamai Idho Idho.

While in college, I was a big fan of rock and heavy metal music. Even now, I would listen to it on any offbeat day but not regularly, like those college years(even before brushing teeth). Looking for a change, I banged my MP3 player with a dose of Metallica, a pinch of Judas Priest, one teaspoon of Megadeath and a big chunk of Iron Maiden sprinkled with Linkin Park's Hybrid Theory. What a suprise. I was running nonstop for more than 25 minutes. Spoiling my ears with those electric guitars and bass drummers, I was trying to help myself with the work-out. Phew !! What an irony.

If you don't believe, do it for yourself, listen to Metallica's ST.Anger, Iron Maiden's Can I pay with madness and Judas Priest's Metal Meltdown, see your mood getting relaxed. I have a dozen of Black Sabbath and Led Zep music for tomorrow. BTW, I still don't have a fresh list of Tamil songs for the tread mill. Any suggestions would help the fellow lazy's hanging out here !!

Prolific Tamil Writer Sundara

Prolific Tamil Writer Sundara Ramaswamy passed away last week. See blogposts on Tamil blogs by Badri, Venkat amd Boston Balaji. More than his famous JJ Sila Kuripugal, I enjoyed Oru Puliyamarathin Kathai just for its sheer usage of the sweet Thirunelvelli Thamizh. I had to read JJ Sila Kuripugal twice, to get understand it completely. His contribution to the smal magazines, by being the publisher of Kalachuvadu is a huge service to tamil literature. If interested, do check out some books by Sundara Ramaswamy .

Blogger Arun Vaidhyanathan's short film Thaniyoru Manidhanukku gets selected to IAAC Film Festival in Indian Independent & Diaspora Films section. Do send an email to Arun and he would provide info about the screening. Good Luck, Arun !!

Desikan had pointed to two amazing columns written by Ashokamitran and Raa Ki Rangarajan. While Ashokamitran's anecdote was short sweet and made me feel a little sad, Raa Ki's wish made me feel guilty.

Praveen has a nakkal review on Ghajini here. A commenter Bijoy Bharathan on Hemanth's blog leaves a list of inspirations for Ghajini[Scroll down to read his comment]. Even if we may not accept to his views, his scene comparisons to hollywood films seems almost right.

Sri Hari gets to watch Anurag Kashyap's Black Friday. I am totally envious of him because of the ban and the hype that surrounds it.

Did you read the humongous book called The Suitable Boy. Then you are to like Vikram Seth and his interview to Outlook. After a long long time, he is back with a book called Two Lives which he says was from a story line that his mom told. Seems like a semi-biographical book on his Uncle and Aunt. Why is Aamir Khan excited about Vikram's latest book ?

Meet SJ Surya - The Sultan of Sleaze !!

Finally, how did I miss it. Belated Happy Birthday Babe !! Enna b'day gift from AnbuChelvan?

What a romance !!

zaheer_fan

What an episode of Shakespearean romance that was. A fan expressed her love for the bowling star Zaheer Khan. Zaheer accepted that gracefully. We have Yuvraj alongwith the roar of audience playing the messenger. All this happening very spontaneously, thanks to the camera for catching on the big screen. Though it was for fun, this Google Video is a must watch. Anything can happen in a game of cricket. Especially in India.

P.S - If you are unable to watch the video in the previous link, it's available here and here.

Mani Ratnam's seemandaputhran Nanda, his mom Suhasini and Suhasini's Chitappa Kamal Hassan share a light moment in the Illayaraja's live concert.

Kamal - Theriliyepaa. Aana unnoda first padathila kandippa naan thaan hero.
Nanda - Thoda !! Mudhalla Kaiya Vidunga. Naan success padam edukalaamnu irukken. Neenga vera !!

P.S - Illayaraja's seems to have rocked the Chennai concert. Those who missed it, have a glance, like me.

P.P.S - India Glitz has a copyright information on their site, which I bumped on only today. It reads, Copyright 2005 IndiaGlitz. All rights reserved. This material may not be published, broadcast, rewritten, or redistributed. So I think we (read I) should restrict using their photos from now on. We need an copyright-less kollywood site and whoever knows one, leave a note. Will start using the pictures from there and extend with a huge support. I am also planning to write to India Glitz to allow me use their pictures.

Word Pressed !!

Recieved an invite from Wordpress.com to setup a blog in Wordpress hosted site. This is the Wordpress version of Blogger and MT's Typepad. So you can use the Word Press interface to maintain your blog while it will be hosted by Wordpress, free of cost. Atleast now, they are sending invites for free Word Press hosting. Not sure what their plans are, as of yet.

I used my invite to create a blog, lazygeek.wordpress.com, to feel out WP hosting. Very similar to Blogger/Typepad, the WP hosting have a set templates from which you can choose from and do some minor changes. I don't think they still have a method to import posts. That would be a wonderful option to allow people to move from other service. But seems like they are in the testing mode and when they open up, there will be many takers.

Warning - This post may

Warning - This post may not have any sense of direction. I'm just wanting to pour out a few things and hence may sound like a rant. You might want to stop reading here. I'm positive. You're not missing anything.

Once upon a time, I was thinking the only joy in the world was reading. Slowly movies started octopusing my life. Reading was a joy even then. Now, there are just too many interests and as one quote goes, "It's only the human who complicates his own life".

While there is so much to read, I'm starting to feel embarassed when I realize, that I'm typing more than what I read. As Internet expands, the information overload increases and you don't feel at ease when don't catch up with the online world even for a day. For that matter, Ignorance is the biggest bliss. Earnestly, I'm trying to get back to the world of books without any interupption to my love of online world. I'm trying to pay equal attention but it sucks. With a lovely, confronting techie job in the day and the few hours that I get to surf the web in the night, my reads have reduced to a unit of tenth. The pile of books that I want to read but haven't, keep increasing. Especially reading fiction has reduced to zero and I think I've lost the innocence to read fiction. For someone who had tried to read as many Wodehouse or Chase as possible, sitting through even Da Vinci Code seems tough now. Though Da Vinci Code follows some of the tried-n-tested methods of thriller fiction, I felt there was nothing big that was going to happen. That zest to complete it wasn't quite there.

As the blog world is fights a worthy war, here is me fighting a different war to shut myself and read a book in a strech. Let's see, if I can do that. Will update more , but for now, back to books.

Saturday Blues !!

Bellevue and Redmond (yeah !! the same Microsoft Redmond) are like twin towns nearly overlapping each other set to the east of Seattle. Supposed to be one of the most pricey communities in & around Seattle, which I was oblivious to until I found myself paying rent through my nose. My community, near an array of Microsoft offices is one the picturesque place.

Was driving in the early morning to Redmond. It was drizzling just like any other day in Seattle. The fall colors seems to come out fast and you could spot the whole spectrum from light yellow to bright red leaves. Combined with the wetness due to rain and the bright fall colors, it seemed like a picture postcard shot. Coming from India, anyone would be awestruck by the colors and ofcourse the rain. Though I've travelled in a ferry to see the Washington Island fall colors, in Illinois, this morning it was a revelation. Just taking an 'U' turn from the home, I could see the dazzling fall colors. Seattle is partly a heaven. Once I visit California I would agree another part of 'delicious' heaven is out there. I suddenly remember, Illayaraja singing, Athu Nammoru Pola Varumaa. What a paradox ?

Kodambakkam, Conservative-ya-Kanjoos !!

This has been a question to many of us, at least to me, for a long time. Why aren't these highly paid actors/directors of Kodambakkam, don't invest their money back in Kollywood. Except Kamalhassan who has a string of failures and success with his own money, not many popular celebrities invest in Tamil cinema. Let's take at least the top two of them, whom I think should be doing it. Obviously, it's their money and in a capitalistic economy, we have no say on who wants to invest and who wants to sit on their money.

Having seen this dude, whose factory is just churning out movies, actors and directors, I've a long time crib that we haven't got a Ram Gopal Varma for Tamil. Thats one primary reason why I never liked RGV. I felt the pressure of him taking over Bollywood to new extremes that Tamil cinema couldn't even dream of. Kollywood has some of the best of the best in Indian Cinema. From Mani Ratnam to Kamalhassan to Illayaraja to Rahman to P C Sreeram, there are at least a hundred very talented cinema people. But is it just because bollywood has a bigger market than Tamil movies, we are lacking behind in many technical/business aspects of cinema. I don't think so. I think we have a bunch of people who are purely selfish and just too timid to invest back from where they have earned.

Either we should be going in for the studio system like in Hollywood or create an company like Factory to manufactures movies like Chinese goods. We don't have both. We only keep shouting like what is said in the previous para, From Mani Ratnam to Kamalhassan to Illayaraja to Rahman to P C Sreeram, there are at least a hundred very talented cinema people. Case in point, 2005 sucks for Tamil cinema. Kollywood could be feared as an endangered species if this trend continues. So what do we do ? Hire a bunch of people who know cinema selling. Not the MBA types. (Especially now, we don't believe many MBA schools !!) Someone multi-skilled like KB's assosiate Ananthu would do. Actually we need Ananthus in dozens. Rope at least two best people in the cinema industry. Even one could do for that matter. Float a production company called Pattarai( the Tamil word for factory/workshop) or Chennai Kalaignargal(Artists of Chennai). Get Ambani or Tata to finance the production house. Ram Gopal Varma has tied up with Ad-labs/Reliance for 100 crores. Get at least 50 crores. Kick start a small budget but high tech picture. The best one we have seen in this category is Kakkha Kakkha. Get Goutham Menon to direct a movie on the first copy basis. He must be surely stringent in spending and would finish a Kakkha Kakkha Part 3(Part 2 is Vettayadu Villayadu). Give some rest to Harris Jeyaraj. Request ARR to tune in the music. Get the film rolling. Make sure the title song is the hot selling tune in the market. The film could be a sure shot hit. Now call Balaji Shakthivel, Murugadoss and Dharani. Hypnotize them to forget the costly dudes like Vijay, Vikram, Surya. Kamal and ofcourse Super Star(we don't have 20 crores on hand as of yet). Hand over 2 crores to each of them alongwith a production assistant. Tell them they can play with it and if they don't come back with a good movie, no producer would book them for the next 5 years. Now call KS Ravikumar. Get him the Chimbu, Dhanush and Sidharth's call sheet. Give him 50 lakhs. He would come back in 15 days with a sure shot success flick. Don't release it. Wait for Dharani's movie to be ready. Now release Dharani and KS Ravikumar's on consecutive fridays. Go on like this with the rest of them. After you are done with one round, try to locate independent talents. For more consultancy, I can fly down to Kodambakkam, for a meager $100 a day.

I am sure that was sucking paragraph of mere fiction. We could do that or realistically do something constructive. Make Mani Ratnam, Kamal Hassan and Rajinikanth (optional Shankar) produce 3 movies a year for the next 3 years.

Mani Ratnam, who owns and runs Madras Talkies, has been making movies ever since he moved out of GV camp. After directing Roja, for K Balachander's Kavithaalaya Productions, all his flicks were partly/fully produced by him. With the banner of Aalayam and Madras Talkies, Mani Ratnam chooses to make films that interests him. With an external producer, there would be pressures and compromises needs to be made on various levels, from story to even shoot locations. While he makes, one film a a year, I think he should be using Madras Talkies as a base to produce good movies that would sell and at the same time heighten the level of Tamil cinema. I don't see any fun in making one movie in two years and nothing in-between. There seems to be a huge gap between his consecutive flicks and he should be encouraging new talents and project them through his popular banner. While he has produced few films including Dhasarathan, Naerukku Naer and Dum Dum Dum, gimme more Mani Saar !!

Rajinikanth, the eternal superstar of Tamil cinema, is rumored to be paid in crores of rupees, which Indian cinema wouldn't have dreamt, until now. After Valli, Rajini Arts, his production house hasn't produced a movie yet. Why not now ?

Agreed, Kamal Hassan has been dumping his money back in Tamil cinema. Raj Kamal's latest Nala Damayanthi failed. But why should he stop there ? Why not sure shot, tight budgeted flicks with the help of upcoming directors like Cheran, Susi Ganesan or even the talented Selva Raghavan. With Kamal Hassan as the producer imagine a Selva Raghvan flick. Won't that be a dream date with kollywood ?

I should get some sleep. I'm dangerously blog dreaming !!

Finally for tech !!

I've been wondering who was linking this blog from CNET and it turns out to be their blog portal, BLOGMA. In CNet's words, To help navigate the infinite terrain of the blogosphere, News.com editors, reporters and readers will determine which technology issues are creating the most buzz among bloggers on any given day. These topics will then be summarized on Blogma, which will also include commentaries from various blogs and links to related sites.

I do follow CNET Blogs but didn't know about the BLOGMA, until they linked their blog post, Trepidation builds around Web 2.0, to the Google RSS Reader blogpost. Atleast I'm happy someone recommended this blog on the technology category. Cool !!

Cho Ramaswamy, currently the only

Cho Ramaswamy, currently the only political observer in Tamil Nadu talks about his views on the recent protests against Kushboo.

From Hindu's Business Line -

"While I do not agree with what she has said, she is entitled to her views. Now those who are agitating against her have accused her of having defamed or maligned Tamil women. In her article she has not said a single word about Tamil Nadu or the women of Tamil Nadu. Her opinions were generally about women. What the agitators accuse of her saying is totally wrong. India Today has been publishing surveys again and again which claim to record the opinion of women of Tamil Nadu. And in these surveys they claim about 20-25 per cent of these women say they are for free sex or pre-marital sex. Now I don't know whether this is truly their opinion or that of the person doing the survey."
Coming down heavily on the serials aired by TV channels, Ramaswamy said these TV channels "regularly put on air serials which malign women in a very devastating manner. Nobody seems to care, perhaps because they are being telecast by Sun TV. So while neither India Today nor Sun TV has been targeted, Khushboo was chosen perhaps because she is a soft target; and they somehow wanted to claim a victory."

Thats the way to go. I enjoy this man for this sheer objectivity in commenting !! Given the state of affairs, we need a dozen CHOs.

A letter from IBM, for Gaurav

InstaPundit's intial post on Gaurav Sabnis issue seemed that IBM was being unfair with him. This superbly written letter which was later published as an update [via] in InstaPundit's blog was written by an IBM employee. The IBM employee points out the case as IIPM Vs The Indian Blogosphere and not IBM Vs the Indian Blogosphere, with enough arguments.

The letter from the IBM employee is re-produced here from InstaPundit's site -

As an IBM employee I was very interested to read about IBM vs The Indian Blogosphere, however if you read Gaurav Sabnis's post you'll see that isn't actually the case, or at least it shouldn't be. Rather it's a case of IIPM - The Indian Institute of Planning and Management - and their reprehensible tactics in attempting to silence a critic. As far as I can tell much of the brouhaha on this issue re:IBM has arisen from the article you linked to on Global Voices posted by Neha Viswanathan. That article excerpts Gaurav Sabnis's blog post where he announces that he's resigning from IBM, however it does so without mentioning why he left, loyalty.
It seems that the Dean of IIPM contacted Lenovo (IBM) and threatened them with a student protest where IBM Thinkpads would be burnt in front of the IBM offices in Delhi. In the face of what could only have been a public relations disaster Lenovo demanded that Gaurav do...nothing. No pressure was brought to bear, no demands were made, there was no "counseling session" where it was darkly hinted that any failure to mollify the demands of IIPM would go on his permanent record, nothing.
In fact Gaurav decided to resign because out of appreciation and a sense of loyalty to IBM. He wrote, "The second thing dear to me is IBM's well-being. IBM has been a good employer to me. I have no complaints about them. Even in light of these events, they did not pressurise me to go against my principles and hush the matter up. Yet, IBM was being dragged into this unnecessarily. It was being made a target of bizarre pressure tactics. If even one Thinkpad laptop was actually burnt, it would cause a lot of bad press and nuisance for IBM. So I did not want IBM's well-being to be compromised in any way."
To me that is the big story, that any corporation can still inspire such loyalty in it's employees that they'd rather leave the company than see it get hurt is, these days, nothing short of wondrous. That there are still people like Gaurav Sabnis who stick to their principles, even when it means making the tough decisions, is marvelous. I'm sorry I never got a chance to meet the man, or work with him, as he's exactly the kind of person we need to keep.
Do it !! Do it !! Do it !!

This superbly constructed montage has ARR's face super imposed on the CD covers of all his movies. This montage was presented to AR Rahman during the Bangalore show by his fans. The image says it's been created by ARR dB but the site seems to be under cosntruction.

Trivias about the collage -
- They presented a 3' X 2.5' poster of this montage
- It has all of ARR's 94 - Originals/Remade/Reused albums
- It was designed by vinit
- ARR liked this gift from his fans, has agreed to keep this in his studio & tell people about it.
- The fans had taken 40 prints of this montage- postcard sized , he signed in all 40 of them.

BTW, try to spot Kizhakku Cheemayiley out there. Can you ?

Kaadhal was one of the few movies that I enjoyed last year. Except for the quick not-so-realistic ending, the movie had wonderful sequences and a worthy cast. Now Balaji Shakthivel's Love (Kaadhal) goes to Times-London Film Festival in the World Cinema category. This is a non-competitive category and they don't give Oscars here, which is a relief. It's only for such film festivals we should be sending our 'good' films. Even if we were to send atleast one film a year, like this, its an achievement.

Rediff India writes on Kaadhal -

The latest achievement for this little film is its selection to the non-competitive, 'World Cinema' section of the prestigious Times-London Film Festival which starts on October 19. The London film festival's official book says, 'Director Balaji Shaktivel has deftly adapted the formulae of Tamil commercial cinema to combine with graphic realism, unadulterated joy and seismic action sequences, spun together with some wildcard editing and sparkling photography.'

@Vantage Bloggers !!

When I read Gaurav's note on the law suit, few days back, I was thinking, thats just an email and what could it ever do to him. I wasn't sure that this would be more worse than Mediaah !! closure on acount of lawsuit from the famous news corporation(!!).

With the Indian Blogosphere heading to a war with the false claimants, I feel sorry for Gaurav who resigned from his job. At the same time, how much ever Nilu's note makes sense to me, it's a brave decision by Gaurav to stand by his post and not take them down. Many of us, put in that situation would have not reacted in the same way. And that's a hard truth.

With the bloggers figting back to justify their stands, one would expect that THEY GIVE UP !!

- Following the Dilip D'Souza way, No links or even a mention of THEM(!) . I am not giving away free advertisements on my account. They already have enough.

- Nilu has been writing hilarious posts on this issue. I am ROTFL since morning.

- Instead of releasing your anger gas here, please leave comments on Desi Pundit post which serves as a repository for this issue. I am closing comments, on this post, for this specific purpose.

Mirrors on the ceiling, The

Mirrors on the ceiling,
The pink champagne on ice
And she said "We are all just prisoners here of our own device"
And in the masters chambers They gathered for the feast
They stab it with their steely knives
But they just can't kill the beast

Last thing I remember I was running for the door
I had to find the passage back to the place I was before
"Relax," said the night man, "We are programmed to receive
You can check out anytime you like but you can never leave"

Killing the Commercial Cro(a)p !!

Hemanth's note on Killing Michael Bay, pushed me to watch the film on iFilm. And a big WOW, I let out after I finished watching this shortish fiction movie with classy motifs. An upset digital filmmaker, alongwith his friend, plans to kill the famous commercial movie maker, Michael Bay. Bay known for his famous masala movies like Bruce Willis' Armageddon, Sean Connery's The Rock and ofcourse the movie in context, Pearl Harbour. These two dudes upset by Bay's bad(read commercial) films which kills the 'good' movies' business, abduct him to a faroff place in Los Angeles. What happens when Michael Bay escapes forms the rest of this short film. It's certainly a must watch provided you have a broadband connection and fifteen minutes to spare. It might tell you what a shoe-string budgeted short film can do.

The theme here is that commercial movies kill the good films with their sheer box-office money, studio power and ofcourse the intoxicating elements that gives people a real doppy feeling. They don't allow people to look beyond the commercial stuff and there-by kill their intellect to appreciate worthy films. A brain dead scenario. But these guys who made the movie don't tell such stuff directly. Rather they symbolically represent the current scenario as in Hollywood and how finally the commercial crop win over the spirited independent filmmakers. More than the inspiring theme, the movie itself is a nail-bitting satire on hollywood flicks which have Matrix style stunts, Bond style car chases and Arnold style WWF fist fights. The only thing missing was a bikini clad vamp. That would have completed a full circle.

I immediately thought about the comparison to Michael Bay in Tamil cinema. While we have a thousand such directors in kollywood, naming just one wouldn't do justice(!!) to the entire group. But if someone were to even make a movie with a similar name, ' Killing XYZ' in kollywood, even as a joke, they would be contested by the mushromming political parties with venom and anger. The kodambakkam heroes/heroines would walk, with their coolers(on a rainy day!!) from liberty theatre to beach as a token of showing opposition to the movie. One group would fire the theatres which features the movie. Thousands of cases will be filled in a zillion courts. If those film makers don't appear even in one of the courts, it would become a contempt of court like what's happening with Kushboo. I don't suggest its all freedom here. But atleast this short film was released in 2002 and still lives on the internet.

Anyway, coming back to the title, I truly feel the class of independent film-makers are nearly non-existent in Tamil. It doesn't need to be software engineers, running back from US, who should make independent movies. It could be anyone from a journalist to a cinema-loving Gumasta of a govt office. Such a wave of good cinema is yet to rock kollywood. I am sure that war will be staged soon. No matter who wins, 5 years from now if mainstream commercial movies( despite an awful storyline), be picturised without songs, I think its the victory for everyone collectively. What say ?

Yahoo Podcasts

yahoo podcast

Ev's Odeo is facing challenges right now. With Apple joining the Podcast fray, few months back, the podcast scene just got hotter. Just today, Yahoo announced it's share of podcasting service, Yahoo Podcasts which is in beta, as expected.

Ev Head's Blogger made a headstart in blogging and its long gone before these big godzillas of internet realised that blogging was a serious business. They don't want to do the same with Podcasts. So they are gearing up to enter podcasting sooner than ever before. And thats giving podcasting all the hype more than its worth. With whatever I've experienced in the last few months, ever since I started subscribing to Podcasts on my mp3 player, I believe, Podcasts will become the next radio. But I'm positive that podcasts may not erupt waves in the internet. They would consolidate soon and would become steady business rather than competitive, just like the blogging market. So podcasts will live but not as grand as blogs. The video revolution has already started and that would be a majot hitch for the podcasts to surge higher.

Now what happens to podcasting services like EV's ODEO ? With the online giants jumping into the podcasting badnwagon, fresh creative thinkers have very little to do in podcasting space now. The major difference betwen ODEO and other biggies is that they have software to creat and upload podcasts. Apple and Yahoo's podcast services are mearly a grouping of podcasts in one place whereas ODEO has a USP of creating podcasts. It wouldn't take much for them to buy this software from some unknown programmer and fix it into their sites. Ev's Odeo might succumb to the media majors if they don't take a lead right now. I just don't want EV to fail like Sabeer Bhatia, after all he was instrumental for a blogging revolution.

Google Reader - The feed reader is out !!

google reader

Time to dump Bloglines. I am a big fan of Bloglines like many bloggers but this is Google's feed reader and it has all the important features of a feed reader. I am sure they will keep adding rich features incrementally.

Google Reader has to itself the user interface which is just like any Google interface[except Groups], uncluttered. It has Ajax running behind giving the light-weight feel and more importantly you can add/mod/del feed subscriptions with ease. You can just export your Feed Demon's subscription list or Bloglines subscriptions as an OPML file and import it from the reader. More features on the Reader Tour.

It's now in beta's beta. The reader engine is partly broken. Some features currently don't work. Looks like they were in a rush to release this as a part of WEB 2.0 conference. Eventually, I'm positive it will become THE browser-based feed reader for the internet. Do give it a try.

P.S - Google Blog's post on Reader has Chris Wetherell as the author of the post. Chris is the massless guy and java script expert who was one of the programmers of GMAIL which has heavy Java scripts combined with XML, in the background.

Megam Kottatum, Aatam Undu !!

It's ranining cats and dogs in Seattle. It seems it was the same in Bangalore too. While I was driving with Rahman's fantastical Kuchi Kuchi Rakamma, the Bangalorevaasis were enjoying like Mani Ratnam's heroines. They got drenched and were still ready for a music mazhai. The A R Rahman Concert happened in Bangalore and I envy those who attended it.

Writes Hindu -

It was six, an hour before the much-awaited A.R. Rahman concert by India Classic Arts. The skies opened up and truly, like the adage, it never rains, it pours and there was a downpour. The props on the stage gave way and the 3D gadget conked out, but the 25,000-odd crowd would not move. Every two minutes, young and old, screamed: "We want Rahman." Rahman made a two-second dramatic appearance with a huge umbrella and announced: "These showers are godsend. Give me one hour and I promise you, it will be the best performance so far." And when the performance did begin at 9 p.m., there was much ecstasy, on stage and off stage.
Writes Deccan Herald -
In sober white, and sans the customary long locks, Rahman opened with Yuva’s groovy discotheque track Fanaa.
Prabhu has a detailed post where he writes -
When he started the last song for the day ‘Vandhe Matharam’ we all were standing on the chair. And it poured. It poured extremely heavily. One particular moment, when he sang ‘Vande Mataram’ the rain at that particular moment was the highest all day. Not just me. Many of us felt the same. This time there were really tears in my eyes. The rain and rahmans music washed away the layers of dust that had grown around my heart and made me cry.

It's still raining here this morning and I'm hoping if the rain would bring along the same music spirit which Bangaloreans enjoyed yesterday !!

Recieved a FEDEXed parcel. Had

Recieved a FEDEXed parcel. Had asked my folks to send across one of my favorite T-Shirt which I had forgot to carry. Along with a pack of jav-arisi vadaams, Ashokamithran's Katuraigal Part 1 and 2, I also got this purple tee-shirt. It had a fresh smell. A familiar Indian washing powder smell. Reminded me of my home at Chennai and I'm still wondering what a little smell can do to your mood swings.

The Hunt gets rolling

Vettayadu Vilayadu
[On the Sets of VV. Image - Vikatan]

Gautam Menon's interview to Vikatan clears off the rumor cloud surrounding Vettayadu Vilayadu. With the movie getting stuck on producer Khaja Mohideen's attempted suicide, it is now afresh with Oscar Ravichandran taking over the movie production.

While waiting for the U.S visas, Gautam Menon says he has completed a schedule of shoot in India. He also upsets me by saying Vettayadu Vilayadu is just another face of Kakkha Kakkha in Kamal's way. While I expected him to make a Kamal movie considering Kamal's age, I certainly didn't want another cop film to be churned out. Makes me wonder why my beliefs on Kodambakkam are a tad high than the reality. Though we could rest assured that the movie could be slick in cinematography and editing, I would have expected a non-cop film and for sure a non-Kakkha Kakkha type flick.

He also reveals that his next flick would be an Arya-Jyothika starrer. He seems to like Jyothika as an actress and that's a consolation for me. Finally he speaks out the truth. SJ Surya might even stage a darna for that. While replying to a question on Ah Aha, he concludes, if only SJ Surya wouldn't have acted in the movie, it could have been a hit like Kushi. We agree Gautam !! We agree a ton with you.

Are you just curious today ?

So if you mamma said, Don't talk to strangers, she was right, then. Not anymore. On the internet, a stranger wants you to answer a question. Ofcourse when you answer you get a chance to ask a question. Take a timepass spin if you are Just Curio.us. Anonymity is the key.

Two Sides of a Story

If this side of the story is like this, from India's National Newspaper dt Sat Oct 1, 2005 -

The photographs of young men and women drinking and couples kissing were published to reveal the `immoral' goings-on at the party. The odd thing was that no one in these pictures was "scantily clad" (as alleged by the police) but the affair exposed the hypocrisy of a tabloid and tabloidising section of the press that regularly publishes `scantily clad' and suggestive pin-ups of film actresses as a circulation booster.
the other side also has its own qualms, from The People's Paper dt Oct 15, 2005 -
The moral jury stepped out in Chennai last week to pronounce that five star hotels are ‘holy’ places where police cannot enter. The jury was appalled at the mention of the word ‘obscenity’ and, pray, what bar licence? The conservatives in the city breathed fire, the jury was not concerned. For them, the rest could go to hell. The Chennai Police, they said, had no right to suspend the hotel’s licence.
But in Chennai, it’s not a big deal to find an escort these days. Just hang around the pubs and the discotheques. If not, there are classifieds to fall back on. One ad reads thus: “If you are an independent escort and willing to provide a full service, please contact me.”
Mylapore might be continents away from Malibu but Chennai’s hit the fast lane. To where, is a question the moral jury should decide as it careens between police stations and discos.

By now way this is to compare the quality of newspapers. Just extreme samples from an entire gamut of perspectives. To which extreme of this spectrum you belong, is a priceless question to your value system ?

Moved Type 3.2

Over the weekend, I quietly upgraded the Movable Type 2.6 to it's newest version, Movable Type 3.2. The idea of moving to blogger is on hold due to the great blogger paradox. The blogger paradox is that it allows posts to be exported out of it's site but doesn't have an option to import blog posts from other services. Why wouldn't google grab a coder from movable type and see if he can code their system to get this import thingy working.

Anyway, the new MT 3.2 has a nice professional interface with lots of useful features and impressive plugins. I am sure this would safeguard my blog from the attacks/abuses like the one happened last week. The only thing missing here is a new template. I am offlate falling in love with the minimalist stylesheet and am customizing it for my own liking. As a test, I tried to customize the minimalist into a good template at the guestblog. This is same as what I did to the blogger template at lazygeekdotblogspotdotcom . Have created few banners with Kamal, Super Star, Surya, Maddy and Aayitha Ezhuthu. Do tell me if you hated it.

P.S - Need a good suggestion to tweak the PHP for getting random banners on the blog everytime its refreshed. I tried to use the mt_rand() of PHP and it never worked for me.

Update [05th Oct] - Updated the Guest Blog with the random images script. Thanks a ton to Saravanan for writing the entire script of random images. Works like a cutie. Keep refreshing and see the images change randomly. Do tell me if it looks cool.

Save My A*s

And what a useful service this is, you are going to think. Just in case you are busy coding your last part of unix script or regression testing the broken links in your .NET code or even seriously sighting the girl opposite to your house, never mind. When you are busy indulging in one of these things, like Madhvan to Reema Sen in Minnale, Save My A*S service would keep sending flowers to your girl friend(s ??) and will bill you after its been done. If only she or they were to notice this uniformity in sending flowers never mind, SMA would still save you A by sending surprise flowers that would make them feel what a lovable boy friend ya husband you are.

From Save My A*S site [via] -

Why do I need this?
If you're a successful professional whose career demands the bulk of your time, you know the situation. You want her to be happy, but work keeps you so busy... and maybe you're just not as good at being romantic as you'd like to be. Imagine how she'd feel if you sent her flowers on a regular basis. Sign up for this service once, and we'll take care of the rest.
How does it work?
You provide us with your billing info and her delivery address. We'll periodically send her flowers every 4-6 weeks, and bill you for each delivery individually (not prepaid). . We'll notify you before each order, and you can edit them in advance if you'd like. We'll schedule flowers for all the obligatory dates she expects (you'll never miss an important date again!) and we'll score you major points by making deliveries she doesn't expect. You will be amazed at what impact sending flowers for no apparent reason has.

I am not sure if Save My A*S would save your wallet but it would certainly save thousands of As a year. If you are one those MadanaKamarajan's use SMA to SYA.

Illayaraja Live Concert at Chennai - Oct 16

From the Chennai Online report -

Ilayaraja said he was putting together singing talents from all over India which is an experiment in bringing the audience closer to sound and beat with special sound effects.
"I wanted to try something very different and exciting. The show will combine a whole set of live elements that are still being put together," the music director said.
Unquestionably a show to look for.

Vintage Salman

The Hindu calls Shalimar the Clown as Salman Rusdhie's comeback book. Even as longtime favorite John Updike didn't nod his head too well in his review, I kept fingers crossed. Though one can't sure if thats true, until he reads the book for himself, its the kind of conscious bias towards Salman Rushdie that makes me think Updike was miserably wrong.

It seems to be a fad to build a story about intertwined lives. Rusdhie puts it as "everyone's story slipping into everyone else's story". Its on a long waiting queue at the library and until I could read, I'm fantasizing with these reviews.

From the The Hindu review -

Shalimar is vintage Rushdie, whose characters, even in their most absurd or dark moments, remain human.
Their behaviour may be cruel, condemnable and seemingly inexplicable but seldom beyond understanding. It is through their motivations that Rushdie explores what he described, in an interview, as the idea of the "worlds in collision" — the clash of "two alternative realities competing for the same time and space". Presumably, these alternative realities are love, tolerance, freedom and debate on the one hand, and hate, anger, intolerance, extremism and violence on the other.

Blogging is stupid; go be a human being

Not me but Heather Burns at The Pine Log writes -

Blogs aren't just stupid, they are crippling our social skills, and there is nothing better than human interaction, trust me.
Believe it or not, there is a world outside of the computer. No joke, it has trees, popcorn and drive-thru liquor stores.
Blogging is worse than being on facebook. Nobody wants to know if you have cramps today or if you sold 1,000 pounds of Nicaraguan cocaine to Chico and the man.
The people in your life like friends and family do care if you show up to the party and do a minute keg-stand or date that really cool guy from Nicaragua who is friends with Chico and the man.
To lay it all on the line, blogging is a waste of time. Why spend time telling strangers your innermost thoughts when you could be out making memories with those you care about most?
