Google's No-cost software for the world's largest democracy

Robert Young as guest blogger in OM Malik's blog writes -

So what is Google's master plan? I believe they are once again going counterintuitive, but in a manner that hits Microsoft where it hurts most. Google will make Microsoft's entire strategic plan and mission, which revolves around the continued proliferation and dominance of the desktop PC operating system, obsolete by making Google itself the operating system. The model they are pursuing is very similar to Sun Microsystems' (Jonathan Schwartz's) vision of turning computing into a utility, like electricity. The only difference is that Google is already almost there.
It’s not too difficult for me to imagine a day, very soon, when I rely on Google for almost all my computing needs and I buy hardware devices based on such criteria. That’s the day Google will have become my operating system. We all know that the internet has a deflationary effect on the assets of every industry it touches, whether it be printing & publishing, media & entertainment, telephony, etc. If what I pose above is indeed true, Google is using the internet to systematically devalue Microsoft’s assets. Perhaps there will be a day on Wall Street sometime in the future that’ll be known as “Microsoft’s Black Monday.”

Ok, I'm a Google fan. But that doesn't mean I should accept Google can outdate Microsoft in no time. Microsoft has a huge dominance in the OS market and their enterprise applications are strong too. For Google to introduce an OS and make Microsoft obsolete in that area may nearly be impossible. One couldn't write off, though. We all know that by introducing small nifty pieces of software, Google is making baby steps towards that. But more than 2 decades of OS dominance cannot by sidetracked in a day. GoogOS, if introduced will gain more popularity than LINUX soon. But to become as compliant as Windows OS might take longer time than expected.

Meanwhile in India, if Novatium's $100 PC would create a computing revolution in India, such nifty offerings from Google would be more than expected. Om Malik's column on Novatium's PC revolution got me so inspired that I'm thinking why shouldn't Google take over providing all the software for those PCs free of cost. Though I'm not sure if Rajesh and his team have already tied up with anyone for software. It would be an unbelievable word-of-mouth goodwill for Google, if only they can sponsor software for this kind-of-network-PCs. How about calling the movement, No-cost software for the world's largest democracy. Shouldn't this be Google's master plan? Google, are you listening ?

Brewing Kaapi in a Starbucks city

Hemanth is currently visiting Seattle and having a nice time with movies / bad time without his Mac. We met over lunch yesterday and had fun time discussing Madras stuff and ofcourse a little bit of cinema. Incidentally, we found ourselves, that we both worked/work/will work for the same company back at chennai and here too.

After a naan filled lunch, we decided to walk back and started talking about cinemas and the famous Grand theatre at Anna Nagar. Hemanth is hanging out in Seattle for sometime and hopefully we will get to meet often to catch-up. I am not going to allow him to escape without talking about our respective blogs.

Read Hemanth's interesting account on we stumbled against each other.

Travelling through the bus gets

Travelling through the bus gets interesting day by day. The gentleman beside me was sitting with small cardboard in his hand. It read,"Bush lied about Iraq. Impeach him". He seemed like a normal corporate man who is returning from office to his home. He was holding the cardboard in his hand while waiting for bus and then kept it inside the bag while travelling in the bus.

Now, without getting into any US political details, of which I'm proud to be oblivious of, if we could have a totally unassuming common man in India showing such a harmless protest and get back home safe, I would agree we have freedom of speech/expression. Not that I'm blaming the homeland, rather dreaming that even if one were to hold a placard like that he shouldn't fear the autorickshaws lined-up in front of his house, the next morning.

7 Rajinis & 10 Kamals

As for the remuneration, Rajnikant's formula is a combination of a fee plus a share in profits, it is learnt. In that respect, he reportedly took home anywhere between Rs 15 cr to Rs 20 cr. That has already made him the top earner among stars, not only in India, but also Asia, next only to Jackie Chan.
And he is now said to have worked out a 50:50 profit sharing formula with AVM Productions for Sivaji. That is sure to increase his earning potential to anywhere between Rs 20 cr and Rs 25 cr and catapult him even higher.
I'm going bonker bonks. 25 cr for just one movie is one hell of a money for an actor. Never seen that before in the history of Indian cinema. The tax officials would be witing to get to the source of this article, Can U solve Rajnikant's biz formula? from ET.

Meanwhile Karthi mails me with a Kumudam reporter 'report' that Sivaji storyline might be a case of 7 look-alikes. Rajini seems to have heard a story during his childhood and goes in search of the rest 6 people who look-alike him. With Kamal's Dasavatharam news adding 10 roles of Kamal we might get to see 7 Rajinis and 10 Kamals. Get ready for sore eyes.

Google Talking

Just as I was speculating on the LA Times scoop yesterday, I was thinking it would be Wednesday before I would get to Google Talk. But Google Talk is out already. Download and talk your way to glory. No more messengers, just talk.

Just in case here's my talk id - lazygeek. Thanks to the quick email from Maverick.

BTW, the snapshot above was taken from google talk mainpage. Its a google satire. Look at what Anne has to say. Cool isn't it ??

Went up-the-hill

He said, "Now, go over to the curb and leave your car in an unmanned position". A brain wave stuck, Oh !! this is the uphill stuff. I parked the car with the tyres in the uphill position. Pulled my hand brakes and said, "I'm done". He said," Downhill now". I did the downhill stuff.

After I came back to the licensing office he said, " You are a great driver. Too good for someone on a driving test. Just that you misplaced uphill as downhill and downhill as uphill. Take the test again. Better luck next time".

Google Desktop 2 and Google Talk

Google Desktop Search 2 was just released yesterday. It's seems like a quantum jump from the previous version of Google Desktop in terms of the front-end. This version of desktop search introduces a side bar aka content bar to give you quick look at the content you choose to view instantaneously. So you can glance you g(e)mail or read news and RSS based webclips, checkout weather and much more. This sidebar isn't new to the online world but interestingly due to its interactive nature, it can be treated as a sort of portal.

We have seen Google making baby steps towards the portal and content integration and this is one giant step towards that. Very intelligently the sidebar makes an entry without any introduction of Google Browser. Its been a typical Google move like before. Many a times Google has introduced revolutionary components under the nose of Microsoft. An entry point without even bothering the browser is certainly a tactical move for a company like Google which is yet to create a full-fledged portal.

All the above said features of the side-bar happens by collecting the user preferences and usage of internet. I am sure this product of Google wouldn't rake up another privacy issue like the Internet Accelerator of even Gmail. Google Desktop 2 has much more to do than the desktop search and the sidebar capabilities will definitely lure customers who shied away from using Desktop Ver 1, fearing privacy issues. Mind you, this Desktop Search 2 is still in beta. Checkout the plugins for Desktop Search.

There is also heavy speculation that on Wednesday, Google would announce an IM Chat application called Google Talk. A scoop that LA Times unleashed today. I'm not sure how many Skypians would GTalking from Wednesday. Get ready to GTalk.

Happy Birthday Dude !! - Madras

chennai
[Thanks - The Madras Day]

It's ironical that 'Chennai' is celebrating Madras Day today. More ironically it completes a year of years. Don't worry to calculate it is the 365th year[ending] since it was founded in 1639.

It was on that day, in that year, that a sliver of land, where the Fort. St. George and the secretariat now exist in Madras - now called Chennai, was sold to the East India Company.
The deal was struck by Francis Day, his 'dubash' Beri Thimmappa, and their superior, Andrew Cogan, with the local Nayaks.
It is believed that this deal was made on this day and these three men are considered to be the founders of this city.
The city has been witness to many firsts in India and been home to great men, institutions and developments. And such a day should focus on the city, its history, its past and its present.
I can never say I'm frantically attached to Chennai/Madras. It's much more to that. Like others who love Madras, I've just love my home town. It's the most lovable place in the world. I've been badly missing Chennai for sometime now and it was only last week, I was intending to ramble here on that. I was planning to list down the things that I miss in Madras. One of the prominent things is the cofee, the crowd and ofcourse the Marghazhi Kutcheri. Even today, while driving back, I was listening to Sanjay Subramaniam and felt so nostalgic. And as the festival season fast approaches the crowd on T.Nagar, the diwali shopping and above all that the friends and folks out there. Anyway let this not end as a crib.

The 365th Madras Day celebrations began last year. A meeting was also held at Amethyst where I rightfully missed to meet Rushdie and ofcourse Padma. More to that Ramnath did say that I missed a lovely lecture by S. Muthiah on Madras aka Chennai. I still repent for that when I read a Rushdie's book.

Whoever says, I love Madras, raise your hands !! Here's mine.

Sivaji - The Rajini/Shankar/AVM combo

I called home today and here is what happened -

Appa - News theriyuma, AVM Rajini Shankar sendhu padam panndraangalaam.
Me - Oh !! theriumpaa. Inikku karthaalaye therium.
Appa - Padam peru Sivaji.
Me - Ennathu ? Sivaji-ya.
Appa - Sivaji [ganesan] oda first padam Parasakthi eduthathu AVM thaan. Athanaala Sivaji nyabhakarthama vechutaanga.
Me - Yaaru sonaanga ? Chumma kathai vidathapa.
Appa - Dina thanthi-la pottirukaan.
Me - Appidiya. Iru naan online-la pakaraen.
Appa - Athanaala Sivaji nyabhakarthama vechutaanga. Sivaji nyabhakarthama vechutaanga.

He repeated Athanaala Sivaji nyabhakarthama vechutaanga more than thrice. He is a long-time die-hard Sivaji fan. Me a die-hard Rajini fan. This is yet another point where we both agree on a same thing with regards to movies. Not that I hate Sivaji still I belong to the Rajini generation. He was so happy for Chandramukhi crossing 100 days with 50 crores. That was because Sivaji Films produced it.

Daily Thanthi adds to the gossip that Rajini/Shankar/AVM movie is named Sivaji. Seems like its named as a tribute to Sivaji as AVM produced Sivaji's first movie Parasakthi. It would be silly if I highlight that Rajini is a Sivaji himself. Sivajikkey Sivajiya !!

Rajini - Shankar - AVM

The titans of Tamil film industry- superstar Rajnikanth and top director Shankar are coming together in a film to be produced by AVM, one of the oldest banners in Tamil.
This will be the biggest ever film made in South India and the deal was cemented today. Shankar has started work on the script of the film which will be released next year.

Too many things to happen on a same day is just too much to handle. Talk about handling Memento's screenplay.

This news seems to be as interesting as Kamal's Dasavatharam. So what's the name. Intially this was a P.S to the previous post and when I caught this on Sify, I think the rumor is getting to be true.

I am one of those who think, Rajini missing Shankar's Muthalvan is one of the biggest sins he commited during his acting career. Now the sin will be excused.

Kamal's Dasavatharam - Navarathiri ?

kamal dasavatharam

As a part of the deal, Ravi will also produce another film with Kamal Hassan titled, Dasavatharam to be directed by K.S.Ravikumar. In this rip-roaring satire, Kamal will play 10 roles something similar to what Sivaji Ganesan did in that classic Navarathri.
Some of the characters that Kamal will play are George Bush, Osama Bin Laden, Saddam Hussain and a few other characters which is a closely guarded secret.
Dasavatharam is said to be the most hilarious script in recent times. Kamal and Ravikumar combination is sure to make it a sparkling entertainer. The film will release for 2006 summer.
Read more from Sify.

Seems exciting to me. How about Crazy or Sujatha for the dialogues ? These are the types of films Kamal should be playing for the rest of his acting career. Am expecting for more information on the actual Dasavatharams he will be playing. Any believable wild guesses on the roles ??

Thanks Praveen for the link.

P.S Prabhu K mails in with a hot news subject. Seems like Sun News has a news item on the next movie of Rajinikanth to be directed by Shankar and produced by AVM. Seems fishy to me but I can't stop that little chuckle in my face. Devuda Devuda Rumor Rumor Devuda !!

Gajini & 'Un'Selective Amnesia

gajini surya
[Pic - Vikatan.com]

Praveen in the comments section of a post rambled that going by the promos, Gajini could well be a rehash of Memento. Seems to be true. To add myself a lil bit of credit, I did think of it initially, when I glimpsed the mottai Surya but never believed completely. Murugadoss' interview to Hindu nearly confirms it.

It is about a man who has this unusual problem — 15-minute amnesia. Some very interesting things happen in that short period of time. I have done a fight staying in the water for nearly 24 hours," Surya added.

Honestly Memento isn't one of my favorites. I love movies with a smart screenplay rather than a good storyline. I did like Memento but I think Christopher Nolan just went over the head with that screenplay stuff. It was mind-blowing. Accepted. But was just too much for someone to handle.

Oru Urula Oru Raja Kumari, a Bhaghyaraj movie failed only because the many twists in screenplay was just too much for the audience to handle. Kadhala Kadhala failed because there was just too much happening in the screenplay that an unassuming audience could grasp, while laughing to the wits. Memento could possibly be classified in that over-the-top genre. However Gajini aka Memento[if it would be] would be a huge step forward for tamil population.

I was hoping that Gajini would have an authentic story line. Murugadoss just disappointed me. I would be happy if Gajini just borrows just the screenplay trick of Memento and has an independently built storyline to feed it. I hope !!

Suderman v/s Sudhish Kamath

Sudhish is more of a blogger than a mainstream journo. I love to have him in our camp. His review of Mangal Pandey in today's edition of Hindu is one of the better reviews of recent times, going by Hindu's review standards. You have to read his blog review , The Balls of Mangal Pandey and come back to read his Hindu review, The canvas is not complete. The content of the review hasn't changed much. The words have. If you do a compare and contrast you know the limitations of a mainstream media journalist.

But the way Hindu's reviews reveal half the plot in their review, the rest half is however very predictable by any short term tamil movie audience. I remember S.Ve Shekar's wit in one his stage plays, "Enna Avasaram. Theatre'la Padam pottuta podattum. Tamizh padam thaney... Engendhu Paathaalum puriyum". Though there is no story as such that someone can reveal in a movie like Mangal Pandey, his review today is certainly a good offshoot from the regular 'boring' stuff. Sudhish, Way to go !!

BTW, Sudhish did say that the movie had a four-year wait. Maybe he just doubled the wait time. It was not even 2 years back, Prince was here to kick-start the movie. Thats just for my urge to nitpick.

As soon as blogger announces the import of posts from other blogging tools option, I'm moving the blog here or back to it's own place. Whatever be it, the templates are now changed and ready to take over.

I've sent a couple of mails to blogger team asking for the release dates. No answers as of yet. Seems like it is their feature request No.1.

Kamal Hassan, the poet

Rumors were also abuzz that the actor has decided to revive his dream project Marudhanayakam and hence he had a meeting with Karunanidhi to discuss about the storyline and script.
Since Kamal wanted to come out with a book of his own poems, he had called on the latter and read out few lines to him and also urged him to take part in a function to be held later to release the collection of poems.
- More from India Glitz

For a minute, I thought the rumor of reviving Marudhanayagam was true. Yet, its a sweet news. A book by Kamal Hassan was set to be released even during Ananthu's days. It was never released.

Finally, I think he has decided that tamil folks can read his writings. Though we have already read his screenplay of Hey Ram and also the shortstory[Aalavanthan was based on this shortstory] that was published in Kumudam, a couple of years back, this full fledged collection of poems would be magnum opus for Kamal's fans.

aMangal Pandey

** There are no spoilers here or in any other review of Mangal Pandey. Whats written below as story is just history. So cool off and read ahead even if you haven't seen the movie.**

Either they exaggerated a dude called Mangal Pandey, in my high school history textbooks or they just minisculed a great warrior in Ketan's Mehta's flick. Mangal Pandey falls short in every other area and gets sandwiched between classifications of mainstream masala flick and a artistic period movie. Rahman and Ketan Mehta fighting to walk away as weakest link of the movie title alongwith a host of other technical crew who have supported them in pulling down a movie of high expectations.

Or the whole of previous paragraph is an outcome of the arm chair critic in me, trying too hard in stopping me from enjoying this typical masala movie. Whichever be the answer, without Aamir Khan the movie wouldn't have even deserved a mention. And we know that a fort called Aamir Khan can carry the weight of a movie effortlessly.

I'm surprised how the movie which was called The Rising throughout the production of the movie suddenly became to called as Mangal Pandey - The Rising. That's probably when Ketan Mehta clearly saw he wasn't making a movie on The Sepoy Mutiny of 1857. He was just trying to document the history of a warrior called Mangal Pandey whose death triggered the Sepoy Mutiny. It was a personal account of Sepoy Mutiny's trigger from the view of the man who kick started it with a handful of gunpowder and infinite dhill.

I completely upset not even by the movie but by A R Rahman's background score. Nearly non-existing. While some songs were great to listen, they were not-so-well-picturised. Himman Dammija's camera angles didn't bring in the required grandeur. You might have to search for sensational sequences and be happy if you find a couple of them along the way.

With the Brits talking hindi more fluently that they wouldn't have problem in repeating, Ek Ghaav Mein Ek Kisan Rahta Tha, like many southies. I have to admit the movie wasn't boring at all. The screenplay was clean, the characterization however lacked depth. It had a potpourri of sentiments that a typical Indian movie need to be successful. From the mangal sutra, friendship, betrayal, romance and even a item number. If only it wasn't called Mangal Pandey, I would have enjoyed it more. The yearning to enjoy a patriotic hero's history stopped all that. Who's to be blamed for that. Me, who drove 10 miles to watch it or someone who made it over the last few years.

A huge bunch of deceived souls eagerly await the next patriotic experiment. Why shouldn't it be him ?

Yep !! true

You can't make up anything anymore. The world itself is a satire. All you're doing is recording it. - Art Buchwald

Maitrim Bhajata Akhila Hritjaitrim

A few minutes back, was listening to Maitreem Bhajata. Not the vocal version of MSS but the veena rendering by Gayathri. The veena version is played in the Yaman Kalyani raaga. I am not a geek of raagas but from what little I've listened to, Yaman Kalyani derived from Kalyani is used to play some of most melodious songs.Veena is one of the sweetest instrument for the ears. Anyone who has listened to Chitibabu's Bells of Joy would accept that.

Accompanied with a solo mirudhangam, Gayathri veena rendering just blew me away. Even during the last Marghazhi music festival, I had been to Gayathri's veena kutchery but with all the smell of bondas and nei pollis sneaking into the music hall, I didn't enjoy the show completely.

On a not-so-cold evening, like today, with the lights switched off in a room, you've to listen to the veena playing to agree with me. I'm not setting ideal situations to enjoy the veena but it was as though she played a personal kutchery in the house, just for me.

Rushdie for Booker

shalimar the clown

Shalimar The Clown is releasing only by September 6th of this year. But Rushdie is already on the roll. The 2005 Booker prize longlist, which was announced a couple of days back, has Salman Rushdie's Shalimar the Clown listed as one of the contenders. Ian McEwan is also in the list. Together with Rushdie, Ian will also be contending for booker, the second time. For Rushdie, the first time was with Midnight's Child - Saleem Sinai. For Ian McEwan, whom I knew only because of his booker prize, it was Amsterdam.

Rushdie's last two books seemed to be out of place. Especially The ground beneath her feet featuring the Bombay rock band, seemed to have a great start but wasn't convincing with all the extended romance. And I comfortably didn't read his next book, The Fury. More than the booker prize, I would be personally happy if Shalimar The Clown would be impressive.

P.S - Any one has a clue why SalmanRushdie.com is registered by some hosting company which does nothing with it.

Sujatha's Kathaavilaasam

Sujatha_Kathavilasam
[Pic - Vikatan]

This week, S Ramakrishnan's Kathaavilaasam column in Ananda Vikatan features Sujatha. Kathaavilaasam isn't as interesting as his previous series, Thunaiezhuthu. One reason why I keep reading it despite the semi-boring narrative is that, Ramakrishnan explores the world of tamil authors and showcases an author's creation. Earlier the column featured Aathavan, Ashokamithran and few other favorites of mine. The column is a success, if only 50 people would have bought Aathvan's Enn Peyar Ramaseshan after reading Kathaavilaasam.

S.Ramkarishnan points out Sujatha's shortstory Nagaram which is considered to be one of his best. Anyone who has read Nagaram would agree that the ending left a guilt in their hearts.

Nagaram's premise has been modified and used in some sequences of Shankar's Indian. One, when Manorama goes to the government office to get her cobbler husband's pension. Two, when Kamalhassan and Sukanya take Kasturi with third degree burns to the hospital.

I just thought I should post, Writer Sujatha - Essential Reading. I had compiled a list earlier, for a friend and happily forgot to pass it on. Will dig it out and post it here sometime.

Digitizing Chennai Theatres

The negative will be changed in digital HD 5 format and encrypted and put on the centralised server. It will then be up-linked to satellite. The theatre concerned will receive the signals, which in turn will go into the local server and then on to a digital projector. The digital projector would be used for screening on a bright background screen.
Pyramid Saimira's idea for digital projection of movies seems very very interesting. Not only it reduces the hardship of actually moving the 'Potti' around but also a huge savings in printing cost. On the contrary, I don't see this idea of satellite uplinking to reduce piracy as the Pyramid Saimira company claims. BTW, what is S.Ve.Shekhar and Madan doing in the advisory panel.

If only this is successful, its another baby step towards better quality of cinema in theatres[not content though].

How not to write a review !!

While the puritans, journos and some industry elites are upset that anyone today can write movie reviews on the internet, I was worried about those who say that. When anyone can walk into a theatre to watch a movie, anyone can comment on it. Whether the comment withstands applauds or succumbs to criticism depends on the smartness of the reviewer. When someone could get angered on all the reviewers of the mainstream media and kick start his own reviews online, it is his way of expression. Just like how the technology enables sharing of the knowledge which was once reachable only by the haves, it also enables expression of a common audience.

With blogging becoming an enabling device for reviewers of all sorts, movie reviewers were also born. A few years later after blogging kick started, you could spot only a few gems here and there. Many of them are just re-telling of the story, sub-standard and completely clueless about the grammar of reviews. They are silly, sloppy and irritating. But these are bound to happen. I am going to support them. Call me biased. With a heap of crap coming from the mainstream media, who are regarded as the people who define standards for writings, these mushrooming blog reviewers will also get consolidated and only the fit will survive. If someone was to write a review of Kurudhippunal and has no idea about the motifs and the philosophy behind a movie, it will glaringly show-up in the review. Either it will end up as 5 paragraph review with every para directed towards a component of a movie thereby encompassing all the elements of a movie or the other way. The other way is to just take a small theme of the movie and magnify it to exorbitant proportions and finally ends up as just a piece-of-the-pie.

I believe a perfect review lies somewhere in-between these two extremes. Any one who can balance between these two will emerge with a successful review that's laudable. If you take either of these approaches, you fall short at the end. Stop. Before you start posting that comment here asking me how I can claim a say on this issue of reviews, I am not the authority of reviews, so is everyone. None of the so-called-reviews that I have written here have followed these rules. Its just now, I am getting the see the grammar of reviews clearly. I haven't followed these at but I believe that this is what will work.

First off, writing a review shouldn't be just to create a controversy or to add one to the count of your reviews or to brag about the knowledge of films that one possess. Writing in-depth about a movie can become boring to the readers and in the same way shirking the other aspects that contributed to the movie. A good review, again, I believe, can only come out of watching a good/bad movie. Whoever wants to write a movie should be moved by the movie, for good or bad. For an armchair critic, everything will appear faulty or shiny. Someone who watches a movie open-minded, given the skill of expressing what he witnessed, would be the best reviewer. Hence the critic ceases to be correct after a dozen times. For him, alcohol has no effect. But for the fresh reviewer who writes reviews just for the joy of it, even a bottle of beer can be intoxicating. The idea of constantly doing the same joyous job again and again, even for a porn actor, would become mundane. Hence the blogging community taking up reviewing as their second profession is a welcoming move. Even if it is not welcomed, it will happen. But as said before, the best will remain. Others will be discarded or will not be noticed.

I was triggered to write this whole blogpost only because of the review of Anniyan that I finished reading just now on Kumudam's Theeranadhi. Written by Ramaswamy, the review made me laugh for nuts. It is such narrow minded review that I was mentioning before as blowing up a small motif to a godzilla. Starting from the Aryan invasion, the brahminical violence and few other unheard theologies, the review completely misleads the reader into a different track. One specific instance where the reviewer points out, that a link exists between Charlie's killing by Anniyan and the Dravidian abuse on Brahmins during the early 70's. He goes on to say that Anniyan is a movie to role-model brahmins to oppose that abuse. In the concluding paragraph, the reviewer tries to balance the review and then goes back to his own arguments again.

While I'm positive that some amount of Sujatha's inputs would have influenced in the characterisation of Ambi, I don't think Shankar to be such a fool to allow his movie to be hijacked for some unknown historical cause. A 70 year old Sujatha needn't write a movie to infuse brahminical thoughts in the people's mind. He could might as well tell them straight through a column. Even if these could be theoritically true, Shankar wouldn't want to risk a high budget movie for such a small cause. Also by infusing these unheard thoughts, Anniyan seems to be a better movie that it really is. Anniyan is such a badly executed commercial movie without any such under-currents. Such reviews are only written to boast on the intellectualism the 'Siru Pathirikaigal' seem to be advocate of. While I don't blame the reviewer for it, because he has a his own limitations of what the editor wants to be published. Probably the entire review would have been re-written in his name.

A similar mi-leading thing happened with a wonderfully shot movie named 'Kathal'. Balaji Shakthivel's movie could be called a classic in the coming years except for it's abrupt ending. While many of us call it abrupt ending, the intellectuals of these small magazines call it as a rebellious and infectious climax. During the final scenes as the protagonist, a backward caste teenager, roams in the road as an insane dude, the heroine comes running to him and falls in his feet to request a apology for marrying someone else. All this happening and the climax being complete here, two reviewers of small magazines (I think, Dheemtarikida and Uyirmmai, though I'm not sure here) wrote that the movie has anti-periyaar sentiments being adviced in the movie. Reason, while the climax happens, a periyaar statue stands in the middle of the road. And hence they call 'Kadhal' to be a movie with intentions well hidden. Even Periyaar himself wouldn't spare these folks.

Not only these folks but there are bunch of mainstream media folks who also write bad reviewers and hence the coming up of a new genre of blog reviewers should be a welcoming move. We have tried everything and now we need to give bloggers a chance. If only bloggers can be level-headed and not write such horrendous reviews, atleast the main-stream media folks would start understanding that just being in main-stream media alone doesn't help, you got to write right stuff. Bloggers Arise !!

Who's the real lazy ??

A year back, I was working at Chicago and while being there, I had recorded a voicemail welcome message on the phone, at my desk.

My friend currently works in the same building and incidentally at the same desk. Today when I tried to reach him, I heard my own voicemail welcome message. Two things here. One, my voice hasn't changed a bit. Its still anti-SPB. Two, who's the real lazy ??

Air Show and Gautam Menon in Seattle

Seattle Air Show

Seattle Air Show which happened today as a part of Seafair 2005, was scintillating. The speed, the turns and ofcourse the noise were at all time high and it was like watching a Wolfgang Petersen movie being shot before the eyes. Seattle Airshow is also known as Mother of Air shows especially because the Boeing being headquatered at Seattle and nearly half a million get to see it. Performed over the Lake Washington, it has the beautiful snowclad Mt Rainier as the backdrop.

While the I-90 traffic was just moving quite contrary to the supersonic speed of the airshow, I went upto Mercer Island on the banks of Lake Washington. And to get a view myself and Ram walked into the lake and were standing knee deep in water to see the airshow. As the U.S. Navy Blue Angels started to perform stuff that I had only watched in movies, it gave me goosebumps. The whole of the Seattle's hanging bridge was closed to avoid distractions to the car drivers on the bridge. I was live moblogging from the airshow !! Check out some photos on the Seattle Moblog.

Gautham Menon in Seattle
[Click for a bigger/duller image]

With my jeans getting wet due to the water, we had to get some sun on the jeans. While standing in the shore, we saw a gentleman who was looking like our 'Kakkha Kakkha' Gautam Menon. With his trimmed down physique and grown up hair he was looking like Gautam Menon's brother. I wasn't convinced that it was Gautam so Ram went ahead and asked if he was Gautam. To my surprise, he nodded his head in acceptance. He said that he was visiting his sister and hence came over to the show.

Though I had personally met him during the Symbiosis seminar at Chennai, with my tough questions, his new hair style and trimmed down 'Vettayadu Villayadu' style was mis-leading. I wanted to take a picture of him and still didn't want to invade his privacy. So I clicked just him without his sister and her son. We greeted and he moved on. All along my guessing part before clarifying with him, I was standing close to him and was saying to Ram, "Hey, avaru konjam gunda irupaaru illa, kojam sotta vera". You should have seen my face turn pale when he nodded for our question on his identity. There were few more Indians around and I'm not sure if Kamal was also there in some VV make-up !!

With Gautam's Vettayadu Villayadu kicking off from New York on Aug 15th, he must have been having taking a long rest in Seattle before he jumps into the shoot. Let's see if I can spot him in some Indian store eating samosa. I would love to tell him he was a nice guy to remain cool even after overhearing me describing him.

'Desi'fication

corolla 05

Not the one above. But something similar(!!) to this 2005 Corolla. I finally bought a late 90's Toyota Corolla with enough miles on it. As my car search rolled from weeks into months, it was like Than muyarchiyil satrum manam thalaraatha vikramaadhityan stuff. Alas, I fell a prey to the 'desi' HondaToyotaHondaToyota syndrome, only for good. The nice thing about this used car is that it has Kenwood CDs/speakers and I'm already looping Anbe Aaaruyirey. Nice to drive, am not cribbing here. Thanks to Sridhar for helping me with the car google.

So when you drive by the streets of Redmond, if you hear someone blasting Fanah in a maroon corolla and shouting alongwith it, give me a kick, thats me.

Oracle's Oracle

Larry Ellison is so bullish that his company just took over iFlex as their third biggest acquisition of the year. After PeopleSoft and Profit Logic, CitiBank's Tech group iFlex will be controlled by Oracle.

Earlier this year when Oracle took over PeopleSoft, I wasn't sure of their plans. Having been in the PeopleSoft Data Warehousing consulting arena, close to 4 years, I had vested interests in PeopleSoft being taken over by another ERP giant. Not anymore. Because it seems like the consolidation is truly becoming the order of the day. And I've matured over the time to think mergers, consolidations and hostile takeovers are all fine until they do good for customers and shareholders. At the end of the day if the customer gets a better software solution, any thing is fine because business these days does not bother too much of ethics.

Having worked in Citibank for a short period of time, I have worked alongwith iFlex people even before, when it was called as CitiCorp. And I have to say, buying out iFlex is only going to do good for Oracle. IFlex has one of the best banking software in India. My buddies keep saying that iFlex's Flexcube is much powerful than Infosys' Finacle and Temenos' Globus. But i'm not taking a guess at it. Whatever be it, banking is one area were software services never stop growing. We have been witnessing the growth of Polaris over the last few years given the fact that most of their client are in the banking industry. Larry Ellison's this move is certainly startegic and would reap fortunes for Oracle. So the next time iFlex sells a thousand installations of Flexcube, Oracle dB comes along with it. Neat, isn't it ?.

Despite the growing contention over him, Larry is certainly Oracle's Oracle. He just made Oracle Inc as India's largest enterprise vendor. Need say more.

Read a recent post on a blog elsewhere and am LMAO since then. Its a blatant copy (ofcourse with necessary changes after a dictionary consult)of a post that I had written few months back.

Kollywood's flip side

While we are sitting here and judging a film's aesthetic sense, there is a producer there waiting to give back his 'Kandu Vaddi' to the financier. Kollywood's historical trend of suicides has just taken a new form over the last few years. Alongwith several heroines and a multitude of support actresses ('extras', as they are badly named), producers are joining the suicidal attempts. Before Mani Ratnam's brother G. Venkateswaran it was another producer (whose name I comfortably forgot). With Khaja Mohideen (Roja Combines) attempting for a suicide, the issue has attained alarming levels of importance in kollywood.

The aesthetic sense of a film is considered to be the last words in cinema business, atleast with the majority of kollywood. There are many other widely discussed aspects of cinema business which we audience tend to overlook as we compare kollywood cinema with bollywood and kollywood. The production and post-prodcution costs are something that every film producer incurs. Also like Bollywood and Hollywood, we do have a good amount of highly/overly paid super stars, universal heroes, ultimate stars, supreme stars, illaya thalapathis and vaigai puyals, all flapping their wings to fly high on the market rates. Their price tags are just so high that they must be having an internal guilt for the rest of the life. With this extra component, the film's cost shoots up badly.

The argument usually from the star actors' camp is that their names sell the movie even before the movie is shot. Why shouldn't they be looking for a considerable share of profit which the producer is going to pocket ? So as the vicious circle progresses in every cinema industry, we at kollywood are attaining the multiplexes era much later than bollywood. Infact, it is still building up. So what's wrong with multiplexes. the multiplxes are nothing but a hole in the audience pocket. The vicious circle is like this - actors hike his rates - producer pays him the rate he asks to get his dates - the movie's total cost shoots up - if hit - producer bags a hugesum of fortune - if failed(as in most case) - producer ends up paying hefty interests to financier - finally attempts to kick-the-bucket. The point to note here is that the actor who gives three failure movies in a row would still stay for another two or three movies because they were booked earlier to the current movie's failure or the producer's flock him because of the blame game he plays.

All that aside, these costs, ends up in our pockets. These multiplexes start charging a 100 plus for every damned movie and the 'rasikan' is left to either buy the ticket for a three digit value or run away to evening bazaar to get his hands on the duplicate VCD. The producers instead of blaming the STARS for all these, should take a collective decision of not paying hefty sum to the actors(which at many a case wouldn't happen) or should stop producing movies with stars(which also wouldn't happen). I think more than the producers it's in the hands of directors who can influence a producer by not going for a star and rather getting a new artist for his movie. This also couldn't be done by many directors except the star directors. Imagine if only Anniyan was made at 2 crores, with all the hit that they claim it is, Anniyan would have earned enormous profits.

Looks like after Kamal and Khaja Mohideen's meeting the issue is resolved and Kamal is getting back Hunt and Play. But I should pretty much stop rambling here because I'm sure that none of what is said above would happen. Even if they happen they wouldn't have a Tsunami effect. After all, the only wish is to relish good kollywood movies and as we have seen with an array of examples like Mullum Malarum / Sandhya Raagam / Mahanadhi / Anbe Sivam that good movies needn't be a costly venture.

Rahman on Raaja's TIS

rahman on raja
[Thanks - Vikatan]

We know that there is some compulsion to say good things to media about pioneers. Rahman's this response to Vikatan on Raaja's Thiruvasagam in Symphony, doesn't seem to be pretenitous. It's guileless and straight from the heart.

I didn't know until this interview that Rahman did a quick show at the Tsumani affected areas of Karaikaal. Also I'm surprised when he says that he is composing music for tamil film called Jillunu Oru Kaathal. Curious to know who is directing it ?

In my opinion this is a different interview of Rahman. Instead of talking on his efforts, Rahman talks mostly about the music industry and tamil music directors. Proves that he is truly back to kollywood. We knew that even with those lines proclaiming, Adiyen thamizhan, naan ungal nanban.

P.S - I think it is this Surya- Jothika starring movie directed by Gautam Menon's assosiate Krishna that Rahman was referring as Jillunu Oru Kaathal. Thanks Gayu.
